Crate Engine dilemma
Sunday, September 03, 2006 10:05 PM
I have found three 2.4 LD9 crate engines online. Part number 12462258 and 12465498.
The first one is approx $1500 and the second $ 3300. Does anybody know the difference
in these two? I also found part number 12465154 but no price on it like it was discontinued.
It did say the 5498 replaces the 5154 one. Could the 5154 or the 2258 be the
original ones with the water pump and the #3 rod bearing problems?

5498 is 99+ w/ no EGR

The other one is 95-98 w/EGR

At least that's my take...

So for $1800 more it comes with no EGR? Can I put the older one with EGR in there?
I don't know, over $3000 for the engine and probably $1000 more for labor and I think
Im looking at trashing the Z and getting a new car.

12360467 is the 96 motor. 12462258 is the 97-98 motor. 12465498 is the 99-02 motor, with higher compression.

Couldn't tell you what the 12465154 is. No idea. Found a website that calls it the "2cd design" but I don't know what that means.

The motors are bare blocks.... head and cams and timing stuff, but no accessories. So whether you put the EGR on there or not, is up to you.

I'm a little curious why the huge price diff...Personally, I'd get a salvage yard motor, or have yours rebuilt. It's just not worth spending the money on a brand new replacement motor, even at $1500. You can get plenty of mileage out of a good salvage yard motor at a fraction of the cost.

I looked at the yards around by me and Im not finding anything less than 60
thousand miles. Mine had 80K when it went so Im not taking a gamble with
$800- 900 plus labor and all that time to redo it and have it crap out again

This is at mantapart.com

2.4 TC Engines- Brand new 2.4 crate engines- completely new replacement 2.4 TC engines
OP 2400LB- Complete long block with no manifolds or accessories- $2,250

Is this the one with EGR or not? They also had W41blocks in there. Will that be a direct
replacement or do I have to get new wiring harness and computer for that one?

Is the 12462258 able to be put in a 99 Cav with no modification?

Good news, I found one from a 2001 Alero with 8K miles from a yard. Couldn't pass that up for only $700.
Maybe if it was from a Z24 or Sunfire GT but, from a Alero I feel much safer knowing it probaly was driven
by somebody, hate to say it but, younger and slower. Only a 6 month warranty on it but, as far as what I
understand the problem with the bearings was fixed in 01 and 02 LD9s. Is that true? Funny thing is that
just from looking at the outside and peeking in the intake ports mine is cleaner. That goes to show it
seems that no matter how much the engined was babied it will die eventually from the bad engineering
problems the LD9 was manufactured with. Thanks for all input to steer me into looking for the used one.
I only hope the new one fares better than the (synthetic oil changed every 2.5K, seafoam cleaned every 10K,
and every possible scheduled maintenanced son of a gun) old LD9 did.

That sounds like a good score. You gonna keep the old one for a buildup?

Nah, I think I'll just sell it. These engines seem too expensive to build up. Getting head work, performance parts for the rebuild, forced ind. and all that jazz to get these to run respectable times is too much In my opinion. Don't get me wrong I love the car but these stinkin Honda hatchbacks are eating the 2.4 up for lunch with a fraction of the money in them. I think I will just enjoy the Z in stock form plus the little bolt ons here and there til it dies a natural death, like totalling it, careening off a cliff or maybe a firery explosion...Yeah that would definitely be a respectable death. After I pulled the oil pan I was expecting chunks in there but there was a little shaving and thats it. Now I'm thinking, could it have been something simple? It had 80K miles and I know thats a little high but somebody could salvage that sucker. From the new one I got it has a brand new looking IDI cover , ignition module, and all that crap under there that alone should fetch something decent. I used my old one because I just replaced the ig. module, wiring, boots, and the white plastic thing that acts as the plug wires just a few months ago. I'm also keeping the old cover because its polished. Any idea on how much I could get for the block /heads and or the the IDI cover with all the goodies inside it. Or should I just return it for the core charge?

8k miles is very low did you see the car it came out of? thats a little too low i think lol
i just replaced my 96 engine (190k) because i beat the hell out of it messing around starved the engine for oil and got a rod knock go figure.. it would of ran longer

80k miles is still a virgin..

how much is the core charge im trying to get rid of my engine also it sits in the garage i duno wut the hell to do with it

The 01 Alero engine I got was vey clean on the outside. Not that that's proof but it looked like it was fairly new even before they washed it when It got it. Under the cover for the IDI they usually get all black and burnt on the white plastic and this one looked like it hadnt ran too long. They actually had a good number of the 2.4s in that yard with all kinds of miles. That was the lowest there so I hope it was the correct miles on it. The core was only $75 and I know that what I have left over has too be worth more than that. The IDI cover with all the junk under it alone is worth more than that.

Hey Jay, could you check that yard for 2000-2002 Z's? I need a engine wiring harness out of it. Willing to pay some good cash

O noes!

Ryan I found the engine from http://car-part.com. That site has scrapyard inventory for all areas of the country. Within carpart.com it directed me to http://www.langstonsauto.com in Tampa. If you look at carpart.com Im sure you could get one closer to you.
