hey guys my dad is swaping radios with a 2000 sunfire GT with the monsoon system and he and i want to know if i can just unhook mine and unhook that one and just plug and play we dont want the radio to lock up or nething like that....also will i see better sound from the monsoon deck over just the stock cd and tape deck?
Thanks guys Ciao for now!
the monsoon system has different speakers and an amplifier mounted in the trunk. the monsoon stereo will work, but I don't think there will be a sound difference. he'll also have to take the car to the dealership once the new stereo is in to get it reprogrammed.

I had a non monson RDS in my cavi, my sister has a base modle, both 04's. When I got my alpine I swaped my RDS into her non RDS and it all worked fine. Everytime you turn the radio it says somethign error for about a second then that goes away and it works completely normal.

but no diff in sound then?....so its pointless for me to do this
Yup. It's the amp and 8 speakers that make the "Monsoon" system.... the deck is the same except for the Monsoon logo on it.

It' says "calibrate" meaning that the BCM and the Eprom in the radio are not matching and is telling you that it needs to get reprogrammed. Yes RDS features will work fine, but that "calibrate" will always come up every time. If i remember right, you will also get a "ding ding ding" every time you start up the car too.

where is this amp and the the 4 other speakers?
The amp is in the trunk, behind the carpet on the driver's side. The 8 speakers are as follows:
two tweeters on the front doors
two 4x6's in the front doors
two two-way 6x9's in the rear deck (yes, they're two channels each... so GM counts this as two speakers)

wow cool man thats for that info now by any chance do you have a pic of what that amp looks like?
As a matter of fact I do
The "premium amplified" 6 speaker system for the mid-level Sunfires and Cavaliers has a smaller Delco amp in the same spot... but it's only for the rear 6x9s (have four wires going to each of them). I have a pic of that somewhere, but I can't find it right now.

ok i have the deck in and its locked took it to the dealership and they said that they cant do it because of some relay? is this guy just some fool or is there really some thing wrong?
He is a typical dealership idiot. It's fools like that, who give the whole industry a bad name.
Just because they don't do this kind of thing everyday, they seem to think it's impossible. They need to use the Tech 2 diagnostic tool to re-flash the BCM to recognize the deck.
I'm at work now... once I get home I can give you the directions (to give to the dealership) to reflash the deck. You can take them and throw them in his face.
sorry to get on your case about the directions.......but as soon as you get time update this thread with them...i hate haveing no music in the car Thanks!
Sorry, I'd forgotten this thread
here ya go!
You're going to need the RPO code for the radio itself... it's on the spare tire cover of the car it came out of.... starts with the letter U. It's also on the stickers on the radio itself, but if that's already in your car then it's probably easier to look at the spare tire cover!! If you can't figure it out, when you get to that part, start guessing.
Here is the procedure:
Radio Setup Procedure
For the DE100 Series radio, complete the following procedure, using a scan tool, in order to properly set up communication:
1. At the Main Menu screen, select: Diagnostics
2. At the Vehicle Identification screen, select the following options:
- Model Year
- Passenger Car
3. At the System Selection Menu screen, select: Body
4. At the Vehicle Identification screen, select J (Platform Type)
5. At the Body screen, select: Radio
6. At the Radio screen, select: Special Functions
7. At the Special Functions screen, select: Radio Setup
8. At the Radio Setup screen, press ENTER (the following test will set up a new or existing radio)
9. Select one of the following Regular Production Options (RPO) using the arrow keys and press ENTER:
- UM6
- UM7 (Base AM/FM Stereo)
- U1C
- UP0 (AM/FM Stereo Cassette & CD w/ Auto Tone)
- U1P + UW6 (UW6 = Premium amp in trunk)
- U1Q + UW6 (UW6 = Premium amp in trunk)
- U1P + U85 (U85 = Monsoon amp in trunk)
- U1Q + U85 (U85 = Monsoon amp in trunk)
10. Select one of the following options:
- USA/Canada
- Export
11. Press the ENTER key
12. Verify that the scan tool displays "Test in Progress"
13. Verify that the scan tool display "Test Completed Successfully"
14. Press EXIT on the scan tool.
Important: The radio set up will configure the following systems:
- LEARN VIN
- Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Class 2 Radio Messages
Without learning the VIN, the radio will display a locked message (LOC).
The radio setup procedure will also clear the following messages:
- CAL
- CAL ERR
- CALIBRATE
15. Cycle the ignition.
There's another procedure for Radio VIN learn procedure... from the Special Functions screen select Radio Theft instead... that might do the trick on it's own... hard to say. I've never put a stock deck back IN a car... heh...
OMG THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH I HOPE THIS WORK!!!!!
You'll have to let us know how it went
ok here is one for you if i find a monsoon amp can i install it? will the wireing already be there? or no
Nope... the wiring in the car is specific to how it was built. Nothing is added, except for the ETS off switch on the 00-05 Sunfire.. if you have a 5 speed, for whatever reason... the wiring is there, but the switch is not. Odd.
I installed a Monsoon amp and speakers into my Cavalier... had to do a lot of tracing wires and I would never, ever repeat it.... not worth the effort.
ok its FIXED i had to show the tech this site and he used what you posted to fix it
and i have to ask what is this ets? and if i get the switch for it and hook it up what am i doing lol
John, do you have the RPO code to know exactly how many speakers and witch system you have? I'd like to know what my 02 Z24 4door has for radio. I got the RDS radio with CD and casette but I didn't look much more. I know I got the 4 wires for the rear speaker.

If you have the amplifed rears... then you have the 6 speaker system. Cavaliers didn't come with the Monsoon... so 8 speakers wasn't an option.
Yours should be one of the following:
- U1P + UW6 (UW6 = Premium amp in trunk)
- U1Q + UW6 (UW6 = Premium amp in trunk)
Where U1P or U1Q is the deck. I don't know which is which... maybe I should get you to look and give me a pic of the deck... and start up a stock deck database
ETS is Enhanced Traction Control... or something like that. You can't add it to a Cavalier... you'd need a Sunfire body control module.. and have to go thru this whole reflash stuff again...
is it worth adding? i dont mind doing a bit of wireing it gives me some thing to do
I'll check the RPO code tomorrow John and I'll take a picture of the radio.
So, the 2 rear speakers are considered 4 speakers?
