I've been noticing my '02 Z24 has been guzzling a strange amount of gas for a 2.2L. Shes a thirsty beast. What kind of gas mileage are other people getting?
It all depends on the kind of driving you do i used to go anywhere from between 350 to 425 miles on a tank of gas now i average between 250 and 300, do you keep up on the maintenance.
I get 33mpg in the stop & go driving to work. I get 40mpg in the highway if i can keep my lead foot out of it. My '03 is slightly modified. Pace Setter Ceramic 4->1 header, AEM cold air intake and removed the resonator. Around town i usually shift between 2700 and 3000 rpm. A tank usually lasts me about 425 miles, with 2-3 gallons left on fillup. (to/from work) Don't drive it much on the highway, I have a big car for that.

on the highway, i get about 38, however, the first time i stand on it, im down to around 25.

Well yeah generally if you do give your J wide open throttle the gas mileage is going to drop, any car will do that but the J i've noticed in particular seems unless you have a baby foot with it it will drink gas like a suburban.
My '03 Eco is a 2 door, and on the highway for best milage I don't drive over 75mph and no A/C. I don't expect that kind of milage when it's hot enough to run the A/C. I've installed a Pace Setter 4->1 ceramic header, AEM cold air intake, removed the resonator and went to full synthetic Mobile 1 in the Eco and B&M Trick Shift full synthetic in the 5sp. Also have Michelin "Energy Saver" radials (or whatever they call them) and keep them at 32psi. Now if i get on it, any at all, my milage drops to around 37 mpg or lower. Getting the best milage requires you drive like your grandmother, everything nice and easy and forget about getting the rev's higher than 3K when going through the gears.

I'm getting 40+ on the highway from my 5spd ECO. Not sure about the city mileage.

I just filled up today, drove it from home to/from work. It's mainly stop/go but the drive has a couple of places that i can go 4-5 miles without stopping. I had 390 miles, put 10.78 gallons in. If i can do division, that's 36.17 mpg on that tank. I usually got 33-34 before i went full synthetic with Mobile 1 and B & M Trick Shift in the 5sp and removed the stock resonator.
Don
i get about 230-280 miles per tank....
i have a completly stock '03 cavalier except custom air intake and i averaged b4 my last fill up and oil change i was able to get 43miles per gallon. which is the first for me because i usually get anywhere from 28-34 miles per gallon. it sucks now that i cant seem to manage that again. and most of that was highway mileage but some stop and go trafic
43 mpg on the highway LMAO you sure you don't have an old geo metro,or a honda hybrid stored in back of your house.
there were a few times in my 02 cavalier w/ eco, 5 spd that i did road trips.
on both occasions i was able to do on average 70mph.
when i went to fill up and calculated my mpg it was 40-41 mpg. no joke. i think there is a "sweet spot" at around 2500-3000 rpms where the engine is optimized to get the best fuel efficiency.
oil changes make a difference as well. regular oil change as said above will help w/ better fuel economy.
I think there's something to the "sweet spot" idea. When i drive on the interstate between 70-75 i get that 40 mpg or more. If i go above 75, my milage drops off like you fell off a cliff to around 30 mpg or less. I think GM optimized the PCM to that range 'cause 70's the speed limit on many interstates. I'm a maint mainiac too,
oil changes every 3000miles with Mobile 1, every 40000miles trans fluid change (even though it's a 5sp) with B & M trick Shift full synthetic..etc. I know they say you can run Mobile 1 more than 3000 miles, but i've always changed oil/trans fluid at those intervals and NEVER in the 30 years i've been driving GM's had an oil related engine failure or fulid related trans failure. (I have blown stuff up by running the sh*t out of it or over revving racing when i was younger LOL)
Don
im about normal i get about 29 or 30 in the city while shifting anywhere between 2700 and 3000. On the highway i get about 33 or 34 crusing at about 70-75. Oh and my car is a base 03 5spd
Yeah, I get about 39 on the highway usually. The best I've ever gotten was 41 mpg on a long road trip. I never went over 70. Around town I get about 30-32.
Geo Metro? Did someone say Geo Metro? I have a co-worker whos husband owns one, its a 3cyl 5spd car and with the ac off on the highway he gets almost 65 mpg. 65!!!! If he turns on the ac he takes a big hit and it drops down to the upper 50's. Thats better then ANY hybrid on the market and its a 1995 !!!! So saving gas isn't anything new but a Metro isn't as trendy as say a Preius. BUT the Preius can't begin to touch that milage in the real world only on EPA figures does it.

drove 10 hours straight to the Outer Banks last year and Avg'd 37.96 m/pg. that was pretty good considering 125 miles of I-95 i was going what the sign said *95* =).

yeah in answer to niteowl, i was going about roughly 65-70mph on the highway....i have really bad luck with the police so i tend to try and not go faster than the posted speed limit. and doing so i was able to average roughly 43mpg. my only problem is as of late i been tweaking my car and stuff and since i been doing that i tend to get a little speed happy and tend to go way over the speed limit, thank god i know where all the cops hide at being i been pulled over one too many times
Elmo i know exactly where your coming from man, my foot is made of cement LOL , i too have had my share of run ins with the police. Though i mainly get hit when i have it on cruise control being as i tend to set it a mile or more over the posted limit, but as for the sweet spot thing that's interesting i generally try not to do anymore than max 75 on the highway maybe once in a while 76 or 77. In some cases just for the hell of it i'll exercise the 5 mile leway, but by the by yeah and as said before being on time with all the maintenance particularly as your mileage starts getting higher is crucial to getting optimum fuel mileage.
you know the mileage has actually gotten better on my car when im nearing the time for me to change my oil. my car seems to like dirty synthetic oil. maybe its just the fact that its synthetic, i dunno. dont really care just wish my mileage would stay that way cuz gas prices are getting too high. by the way im nearing 63,000 miles
Yeah Elmo, i just passed 64,000 myself actually at about 64,350 or so gas prices suck and considering they are what they are i really don't think i'd want to own anything bigger than a 4. Although now that i think about it the manual J's probably out do the 4 speed automatics gas mileage wise don't they
actually the aoutomatics outdo the manual...well thats according to EPA standards. but the difference is nominal, it really comes down to how u drive. i use different type of gas and different octane ratings and i found that i get the best mileage with Shell's V-Power gas which is 93 octane rating, yet i also do just as well with Super Gas regular 87 octane rating, so go figure. i get whatevers cheaper. but if i have more money than i reallly need i just put super in. stupid gas prices makes me wanna get a bike, but cant cus i have a baby on the way. so all my car mods and everything is sitting on the back burner......total bummer
