i threw a valve on my 2.4

My 2000 Z24 has 55k miles on it... since ive owned the car, ive been runing synthetic oil 5w30 (mobil 1), and changing the oil around 3k miles... i dont dog the car and i usually shift between 2.5-3.5 ....

today...

One of the valves on cyl1 on the front bank shot through the valve cover... destroying the head and cam...

now does this engine have a timing belt or chain... if belt... when is it supposed to be changed (60 k right?) ... if chain... is it possible to snap this early in the game... or what else could cause a valve to do that... (i havent been able to pull the timing cover off yet to see... so its just a theory it snapped)...

what happened was...

about 2 days ago, it started doing a minor valve tick... but it was no more than my 93 cavy ever made ...

yesterday it started to boggle at idle a little bit... 1st gear at idle was sluggish... but once i did any action on the throttle it was fine... i figured it was vaccum related...

today driving home from work... it nearly stalled at idle... i put it in first and it ran like @!#$ to 2500 RPMS... as soon as i shifted in to second... i heard *BANG* and it cut off and wouldn't restart... i pulled over, popped the hood, and found oil all over cyl1 part of the valve cover (front bank)... i pulled the "2.4 twin cam" cover off and saw the valve cover had a 2 inch crank down it... when i towed it to the shop, i found a valve chillin in the head in about 50 million pieces... the cam was nicked up pretty back as are the walls of the head...

i think i found another 2.4 with 40k miles in it for $350 (its out of a totaled Z with rear end damage) but i cant get back ahold of the guy so i dunno... but he promised to show me it running before he sells it to me... otherwise im ordering a new head tomorrow from GM or i'll make a junk yard and then machine shop run tomorrow...

but any suggestions as to why this happened, and how i can prevent it in the future

If the chain did break (it is a chain), and it forced a valve through the lifter and through the cam and then through the case... then the engine is toast. Are you sure it was a valve and not just pieces of the cam or lifter? Either way, you'll probably want to replace the engine, its easier than pulling the head off and doing all that work.

ya when i looked at it... i grabbed the valve lock out... it was still good... and i found a piece of the valve face wedged between the cam and the head wall...

i was lookin up prices... a new engine complete is $3000 ... thats the cheapest my shop could get it in...

a new head is $525 on GMpartsdirect.... so im looking at about $475 my cost...

even with everything imma have to get ... head gasket, timing chain, head bolts, valve covers... its still gonna be significantly cheaper...

don't forget lifters and a cam. it's cheaper in the long run to have a new engine.

We just got a 2000 2.4 with 28k on it for 1k shipped. Usually find them for about $650. I would just swap a new motor in as well. Can you get pictures? I would love to see the valve come through the cam housing and all. We have a 2.4 motor that while running the crank pulley came off taking the key to the gear on the crank. Of course the bottem end kept turning and the valves stopped. Every valve hit every piston, but know can through the head.
