Auto Trans in 2004 Sunfire

Anyone else have a problem with their auto trans? Mine doesn't seem to shift into 4th until the engine temp has come up to full operating temp. (It's still under warranty, but I would like to know if anyone else has had this problem).

Take it to a dealer if it's under warranty.

Its possible that this is normal. On a totally different vehicle (my '96 Dodge Ram) I'm pretty sure it even says in the owners manual that it won't shift into overdrive/fourth until the engine has reached normal operating temperature.
Any J-body gurus out there know anything about this? My car's a 5 speed, so I don't know from personal experience and I don't remember reading about it anywhere.

I have never had this problem... and I've had 3 4-speed auto third gens.... never a problem. I'd say it's either low on fluid or fooked.

sorry to bring up an old post but if its not hitting overdrive before operating temp, its because the ecm is measuring the temp of the tranny fluid, and it will not allow overdrive until the temp of the trans fluid hits a predetermined temp. i don't remember the reason but i would gguess it allows the fluid to reach proper viscosity, the colder the thicker, for everything to synch properly, esp since fluid pressures in engine and trans are about twice when cold as compared to operating range. mine will not do it until its just below 195 on warm days say 60 and up, but days where its below 30 mine wont hit overdrive til its been at 195 for 30seconds. since you have the ecotec, if its doing 27-3000ish while cold doing 60 and goes to about 2300 after warm up its fine. if its like you have it in "3", then take advantage of the warranty. mine being a 2200 is about 2500rpms cold and goes down to about 2150 hot.

78,000 on my Ls sedan and never had this prob with it, in fact mine when i hit fourth will actually drop back to about 15 or 1600 and then settle in somewhere between 1500 and 2,000 even when the engine is cold. I have an eco 4 speed auto.

TCC doesnt lockup ( overdrive) until engine temp is atleast 162F, and the trans temp must meet a certain temp to.

now that you mention it rob i noticed this morning that mine never kicked into overdrive until engine temp was around 195 or so, so to all those that read my previous post i apologize i am mistaken guess i just wasn't paying that close attention to my car

occasionally my car will hesitate to go into 4th until warm, but only when its pretty cold. being that im in central FL this doesnt happen often, but it has happened maybe 10-15 times in the almost 80,000 miles ive got on the car.

Thanks for digging this old post. Everyone's input has been helpful. I've noticed now that the temperatures have dropped that 4th won't come until the engine is completely warmed up (195ish). Its been consistent so there seems to be no problem with the trans. Thanks for the input!

You could change youre tranny fluid and filter. That could correct the problem.

Good Luck.

What problem?

Transmissions dont shift into overdrive until the car is warmed up.

If it didnt shift at all into 4th, than yeah there is an issue
