Hey i have an 04 cavalier with approximately 58,000 on it and the back brakes squeal when i first start up is this normal i just had my brakes worked on a month or so ago they sanded down the rotors and did some stuff to the pads is it possible my brakes could be gone already
first of all, punctuation is your friend.
second of all, just for your information, cavalier's rear brakes are hubs, not rotors.
third, are you positive its the rear brakes and not the fronts?
now, when you say they squeal when you first start up, what do you mean? they squeal for the first 5 minutes non stop, they squeal just when you hit the brake pedal the first time...shed some light on that one.
the people who installed your brakes might not have used any/enough brake goo silencer or they could have the brake tighted up too close to the hubs...
GO PATS!!!
sorry, i meant we have rear drums...not hubs. no idea where my mind was at.
GO PATS!!!
It only happens when the car has been sitting overnight and the engine is solid cold as in when i first start it up in the morning. As the engine warms up it goes away 2nd it sounds like it is coming from the back where else could it come from the fronts don't squeal they squeak when they're about to go out
sorry, getting confused. you're making it sound like the rear brakes squeal as soon as you start the car while the car is sitting still and you aren't touching the brakes...correct me if i'm understanding wrong.
GO PATS!!!
it usually happens right after i put it in gear , and am pulling out of the driveway i'll lightly hit the brake and it will squeal sorry for the confusion. once i drive it for a few minutes it seems to go away i try and baby my brakes anyway.
sounds like maybe they just have the brake shoe tightened up too close the the drum. if you take your tire and rear drum off you can adjust it with a small screw located inside the brake drum. i'm not totally sure on the location of the screw though. if you go into the suspension/brake forum and search for how to adjust the rear brakes, you should find a how to.
GO PATS!!!
sorry i couldn't help more.
GO PATS!!!
I did mine on the '03 cavy about 3 months ago and it's a small "Star" wheel between the shoes. It extends / retracts by turning it, you can see the threads while you turn it. Retract it about 1 turn and your squeak should go away. Don't retract it more, or you may lose your parking brake. Also have a look at the material on the shoes, if it's been too close for a while it may be look burned and that's not good.

very true..this may be the case......
BUT ..you said it didnt make noise after driving it a bit....did you know that drum brakes have a temperture rating?? for cold and hot? it will say something like EE EF or FF something to that effect on the side of the pad when you take the drum off...you need to have certain rating for perticular climates your car is in....you have the wrong pads on the rear..in which case the rear brakes arnt fully doing their job till you get them warmed up
