What is the difference between the vin F and vin 4 engines. I think the F code popped up in '02. but I'm not sure. The reason is, my girlfriend needs a new engine, and I didnt know if both these would work in her '99 cavalier. It had a 4 code 2.2 to start with. If either would work, is the F a harder swap?
Thanks for the info.
Don't quote me on this, but I think the F means it has an Ecotec.
F= ecotec 2.2 DOHC
4= 2.2 OHV
4= 2.2L OHV (the pushrod engine)
F= 2.2L OHC (not dual overhead cam, just single)
I don't know how compatible the two are though, you might want to stick with the OHV. Or change everything and get an ecotec. Whatever..
WTF? please, read more bofore posting worng info. If you EVER find a 2.2 OHC, you'll be like god because Gm never did a 2.2 OHC. 2.0 OHC yeah witch died years and years ago.
The Eco is code F witch is 16 valves DOHC.

its probably listed wrong. it does have one cam, but its in the block, not over head.
to the original poster: if you want the easiest motor swap possible, stick with the engine that belongs in the car (the one that matches the vin)
The ecotec is way more powerful than the OHV in stock trim, but NOTHING from either engine is exchangable (the only part thats the same is the lower engine mount)

I was about to say.
They did too make a SOHC motor, but not for a third gen.

I have a 1997 2.2L what other years are interchangeable in terms of head or block or other accessories?

Mine is still alive.... kinda.
You can't outrun the radio.
I am working on a 2200 motor ( 2.2 l ) from a 99 cavalier if you stay with 2.2l , or the 2200 motor they will work. it has been done , and the junkyard by my house has done them . I going to be doing that this weekend coming up , the only thing that will not the same from 96-97 to 98 ( i think the stop the 2200 is motor in late 2002 or 03 not sure a 100% ) is the injetors
Alright, so whats the diffence in HP?? the Ecotech puts out how what at least 120, if that with that DOHC? I wanna know what stock HP would be for the 2.2? This might be in the wrong forum, but you guys seemed to be talking about it. So let me know...aight?? thanks

Actually the ecotec has 140 hp. All ecotecs are DOHC. PJ's ecotec did what? 141 or 145 at the wheels? Is that right? The 2.2 OHV only makes 115 hp. Just never get one with the 3 speed automatic.
You've claimed all this time that you would die for me. Why then are you so surprised to hear
your own eulogy?

WHy not get the one with the automatic...i dont have it i have the 5 speed manual? but i am just curious?

O_o cuz autos are slower
when you pair up a weaker motor with a slower transmission you get the slowest stock cavalier made (OHV 3 speed auto)
n yea my ecotec made 142hp and 145 tq at the wheels practically stock...
an intake, catback exhaust and fidanza flywheel and spec stage 3 clutch (not like they helped but i like listing them anyway) was all I had.
my 2200 OHV when I had it after a head port, full exhaust, intake, ignition upgrade all of which cost me about $3000 or so put down 115hp and 131tq
the car was 5 speed manual for both engines.. eco autos aren't so bad, but auto OHVs need some work to be quick.
3 speed auto is best for drag racing when its built, but in stock trim its the slowest 3rd gen you can buy.
