(I also posted this in the Maintenance Forum)
I have a 1995 Cavalier (2.2L, 3speed auto). It's got the usual TCC Solenoid failure symptoms (stalling when stopping after cruising). I've got the TCC wire unplugged for now. But, I want to fix the problem.
I bought a replacement solenoid, cover gasket, and have both the factory and Haynes service manuals. My question is this:
Has anyone on this board changed the TCC on a 3rd generation ('95 or newer) Cavalier?
The mounting is quite different from earlier models. I've looked at the Fiero thread in other posts, and pictures on the V6Z24.com web-site - those procedures won't work here. The main difference is the left-side transaxle mount. It completely surrounds the valve-cover and must be removed to gain access. According to the manual, to do this you have to remove or disconnect the following...
- Left wheel
- Splash shield
- Crossmember
- Ball Joint
- Sway Bar
- Drive Axle
- Transaxle cooling lines
- Left Suspension Support
...and so on.
Please tell me there's an easier way!

THIS. It should clear things up.

with the 3rd gen J's raise the front of the car and put it on jack stands. Supprt the drivers side of the tranny/engine with a floor jack (put a piece of wood in there). Remove the drivers side tranny mount(tip: turn the wheels to the left and go behind the front tire w/o removing tire). With the mount out, lower the tranny/engine and let it haing (the passenger side mounts will hold the engine/tranny) and you have good access to the side pan to do the repair. After fixing it, raise the engine/tranny and reinstall the tranny mount. Put the car down and check the fluid.
I missed that post in my search - thanks.
Can I get away with drive-up ramps, or do I need the dangle of the front wheel to get clearance for the mount? There's not much meat for a floor jack under the front end - it's tough to get it up on jack stands. Any suggestions? I'm spoiled by my other vehicles with full frames.
