UPDATE - ECOTEC SWAP info for 00-02 w/pics!
Sunday, November 27, 2005 3:08 PM
well here's some pictures of the newly acquired engine and transmission. I've also put some pictures showing all the hookups for the new engine (mechanical wise) to prove that this will be damn near a direct bolt in into a 2000+ OHV equiped car.

Read on for some swap notes.....

2004 ecotec engine with 4000 miles on it

SWAP NOTES:
Keep in mind, 2000 was the year that GM updated the electronics in the chassis of the Jbody, so anything earlier would have a lot more work getting the ecotec installed and functioning properly. 00-02 has it pretty freakin easy.

MOUNTS: All mounting points in the chassis for the motor and trans will be exactly the same. You will need the upper mount howeever, since that is not compatible with the engine.

ACCESSORIES: None of the OHV accessories work with the Ecotec. I had to acquire a starter, alternator, and a/c compressor to go on my 2004 engine with 4k miles on it. I found them on ebay, and should be getting them very soon.

TRANSMISSION /FLYWHEEL /CLUTCH /DRIVESHAFTS: Even tho the transmission is the same, the clutch and flywheel are not. I had to buy a flywheel and a clutch for my engine. You can use an automatic or a manual engine it doesn't matter. However, the computer MUST BE PROGRAMMED for a manual if you are to use a manual transmission.

If your car is originally a manual (remember, 00-02 ONLY) everything will be perfectly fine. Clutch lines, shift cables, reverse plug, driveshafts are all compatible with the new transmission. The only reason you have to get an ecotec transmission is because of the mating surface to the engine. The OHV shape transmission is NOT compatible. And don't think a bellhousing will do it because there is no removable bellhousing.. its formed into the casing of the transmission.

I still need to buy a clutch.

Fidanza Flywheel (light as hell)

On a side note, the OHV GETRAG transmission WILL fit any 60degree V6 made by GM, as well as the 90 degree V6 3800 s/c engine.

RADIATOR: The radiator for an ecotec is the exact mirror image for that of an OHV so you need an 03+ radiator. I don't think its a good idea to run 3 feet of radiator hose in an X shape under the hood.

FUEL LINES:... raise my only concern. The return line does not have a compatible fitting to go to the ecotec fuel rail. I either need to use the fitting i got with my ecotec, or get a return line with the proper fitting on it. I was thinking about threading my return line FPR fitting into the eco's FPR, but I don't want to do that.
ecotec fuel rail

eco fuel rail

OHV fuel rail.. red arrow shows return line with improper fitting to go onto eco fuel rail

COOLANT LINES: are where they need to be, and don't bother me... other than the radiator crap but see above for that.

ecotec water lines

ohv water lines.. in exact same spot

POWER STEERING: since the PS is driven off the camshaft, the lines need to be stretched over to the other side of the engine. It raises a bit of concern, but the connections are identical so its only a matter of lengthening, shortening PS lines

eco power steering lines (one is bent)

ohv power steering lines identical fittings only hose length is an issue since the eco PS pump is on the other side of the engine

all in all my confidence is higher every day that this swap will be completed in a 2 day period or less from start (removal of OHV) to finish (start up of ecotec).

If anyone has any questions, or comments please post. I'm trying to make sure i've covered all my bases, but if you see anything or think of anything I haven't please bring it up.

Good info, except. The upper motor mounts will work on both motors. Meaning the Ecotec mount will work on the non ecotec motors (2.2 OHV, and 2.4), and the 2.2 OHV and 2.4 upper mounts will work on the Ecotec. I know this for a fact because we have done it.

Not now. Because the car is no longer around. We put a 2.4 motor mount (upper) on a Ecotec motor.

Take video and lots of pics when you do it. Like just a minute or two of video during every step/problem you go through. Would be very worth it for anyone else considering the swap in the future.

I guess it would work with a 2.4 but trust me, the ecotec mount will not work on the 2200 unless there's some more disassembly required in order for it to mate up

but the rksport ecotec upper motor mount for instance, definetly does not bolt up to the 2200

What about exhaust differences?

I believe that the 2200 has the manifold on the front of the motor?

Will the eco mani bolt up to the 2200 pipe?

Just curious

you cant use the 2.4 mount......you have to get one off a ecotec engine...
i am in the middle of the swap too.

on a side note anyone going eco from a 2.4 the power steering pump will swap right over mounting hoels and everything

yes they will

thats why they don't ask what engine you have for cat back systems. from the cat back is identical. I have a stock ecotec manifold and cat I'm going to bolt up to my exisiting cat back system.

I agree

I'm using an ecotec upper mount stock to begin with, then getting the rksport mount and returning the stock one to its original owner (he already has the mount)

I'm pretty sure none of the upper mounts are swappable. Someone in this thread said the eco and 2.4 upper mount are swappable, but I can assure you the OHV upper mount is NOT compatible AT ALL with the ecotec engine or ecotec upper mount. There's no way in hell it would work.

I have 4 parts left to acquire before i can do the swap:

Radiator
ECU
main engine Wiring harness
and a clutch

I just need my next paycheck and I should be able to get all 4 then all I need is 2 days of no work to rip the old @!#$ out and put the new engine in.

Tempting.... think we would have time to put a turbo on in the parking lot too? that way i get my money's worth out of my three runs, one 2200, one eco, one turbo eco.... LOL

but on a more serious note... how much are you spending on the swap and what all is needed i might actually be interested in this in the future...

It seems that going from the LD9 to the ECOTEC would be easier, PS lines are similar, however i did notice the coolant lines are different, so a new rad would be needed. Question though, would the swap from a 2.4 to an ECO be worth it? Best a luck to you PJ as well, and great right up so far.
