I know mine does, what causes this? I don't really know how to explain the sound, it's something like a metal-on-metal sound. It sound like my grandfather's beater truck when he starts it up (early 80's Chevy). My friend's 2000 2.2 doesn't sound anything like mine when he starts it. Granted it is not the exact same engine. Anyway, input?

search the forum.
i feel generous,
its the timing chain
Hardly a noob. And I searched, if I did not know the source of the problem, how would I know to type "timing chain" in the search box? And no, it ISN'T the timing chain. The noise comes from the flywheel/crank area, noob.

Valve springs are fine, I took my valve cover off less than a week ago to replace a leaking gasket.
is it while your turning the key? Could be a sh!t starter.
My Sunfire
It's not really a problem, it's just annoying. I know of 2 other 2.2 owners with the same sound, but none of us can find why the sound happens.
There is just a loud sound that my OHV makes compared to an OHC engine.
i don't notice this??? does it start after a certain time? i got like 85,000 miles on her
I have 146,000 miles, and the other 2.2 guys I know have over 100,000 on theirs. I'll see if I can get a sound clip (no promises).
i have a 97 2.2 and it doesent do what you described
with 138k on it, forgot to say that in first post
my car doesn't start perfect but it doesn't start rough.... mine did start rough until i put a new starter on it. but I also had a snapped starter bolt (shorter one) so the starter was giving alot of kick while starting on the one bolt making it soudn like ass. put a new bolt in and it started ALOT better....
ShowFire
Timing chain tensioner probably. Alot of the older stlye 2.2's do it after 100k. Newer ones, not so much. I have also heard of it being just the serpentine belt tensioner, but usually you don't get that lucky.

My 2.2 does the same thing too 248 kms on mine starts rough and makes a weird sound too
mine has 105,000 on it now and it doesnt have any rough sound , it starts nice and smooth , so i cant say i have had that problem !

my old 97 did that i think its the starters they put in them... the 98 and above starters were higher toqure and they didnt sound as nasty as the 97 and below
i heard a wierd noise from mine and well it was just the injectors ticking and you could hear it more because on start up the motor idled high for a couple minutes
ac compressor, try turning it on or offf when you start you car you will hear a difference, it was the compressor on my car,
My starter spun it's last time yesterday, so I bought a new one. And SLO CAV was right, that was my problem. Odd thing is it didn't give any warning as to it was about to die... Oh well, problem solved.
