good suspension part for $15
Wednesday, November 02, 2005 6:01 PM
today i went to atuozone and bought energy suspension's performance sway bar end link bushing set. i saw the link kits about a week ago and thought yeah right there is no way that this 20 dollar part will do anything. then i saw it in an add in HCI/ i thought what the heck it is 20 buck if it doesn't do anything then oh well. they don't make a link set for the 95 + j's they do make them for the 2 gens. anyway came home jacked up the car one side at a time, one could find one jack stand. it is a 13 mm bolt with a wired large nut on top. i used vise grips for that. unbolted it. romoved the oem bushings form the old bits of the links. they will fit on the wierd nut retainer, you may have to tap them on with a hammer. if they don't go all the way on don't worry, when you tighen them up they will slide on. bolted them back up. i don't know how tight to make them. i made them tight. when i 1st put the car down the front looked a little high. dropped down after a little bit of driving. much to my surprise it did help. no as much as a anti sway bar. it helps a whole lot with light to moderant turns. when you jerk the wheel back and fore when driving it acts the same as stock, but a little better. whole car feels tighter. the wheels do sreech more then before. just a bit. when acceling thru the turn it seems both wheel sreech instead of just the inside one. it is total worth 15 dollars. wow sorry this is a long post. trying to give as much info as i can.

The other way to do it is get their 1" end link kit.
Kinda tough to find, I"ve only been able to find it at Pepboys.

But it has to be one of their larger version stores.
And they have them with black bushings.

Last two numbers ain the part numbers is 22. So its like 9.2122 or something.

just rear. i don't think u will have clearance issuses. you use the stock end link but replace the bushings. if they now havw issues then the stock stuff should two. i wish i took pics to show you guys. the kit includes eight polyurethane bushings and eight metal washers. it is a one size fits all. if any of you guys install these let me know if i am just crazy about the impovment. not just hey they should work better so they are.

what are you talking about? i have the full Koni kit on my car and even on full soft i hit nothing. these dont lower your car any just take the flex out so i dont see how these could make you kit ANYTHING you didnt hit before.

you DO NOT have to use the factory POS setup. I HIGHLY suggest you get rid of that flat plate piece of crap and at the VERY LEAST replace it with a nylon lock nut. I took the smart step and replaced each of mine with grade 8 bolts, washers, and nylon lock washers. but like i said...AT THE LEAST GET RID OF THAT PLATE. you will thank yourself later if you ever have to undo these in a hurry.

ok, well what i meant is this

driveshafts, brain fart, axles

as for the endlinks, i was not talking about the bushings themselves, i was talking about the whole endlink, part number 9.8120 I BELIEVE. problem with em is that they are definitely too long, and come WAY to close to the axles. i cut down the center spacer about 1/2 as long as originally, and it worked fine for the most part. only thing you might run into though is that once u cut it down, you might not have enough threads to screw on the nut. which in turn, my solution was to switch the endlinks w/ my rear sway bar (which were just a little bit shorter), and everything fit nicely

i wish i still had my pix, but my old thread i think was deleted and i lost the pictures when my old hard drive crashed

If you are talking about the Front sway bar bushing i did that about 3-4 years ago but i just replaced the bushing and it made difference in the Front of my car in addition to my rear sway bar tighted everything up real nice.

If you get replacements from GM they're grade 10.9. Grade 8 is strong than the stock 8.8 by about 42%, but grade 10.9 would have been a better choice.

For those who are wondering what all that means: Wiki Knows

yeah 10.9 would be good but thats metric stuff and that @!#$ is about 2x what the grade 8 runs. if i thought i would stress the grade 8 to the breaking point id go higher.

be really anal like me and get the AARP bolts....$25 for a pack of 5 bolts baby

Side note, anyone near an Ace hardware store, they have a bin with 'chrome' bolts, nuts, washers/
I'm assuming they are chromoly similar to AARP.
Very strong.
Very expensive.

they are NOT chromemoly bolts. they are chrome plated grade 5 or grade 8 hardware. i was it was chromemoly. that would be awesome

You guys really that worried about breaking endlink bolts?

Rediculous, you drive a Cavalier, I'm sure the grade that Energy Suspension provides is plenty enough.......

ummm....i broke a stock bolt. upgraded to energy. broke that cause of a bad wheel hop incident. switched to the grade 8. havent even cracked the spacer yet...and thats my weak point

For some reason I believe the Energy endlinks I have are grade 8.....guess I'll double check at some point.
