I'm sick of my brakes, they suck bad! HELP!

What's up with GM? Don't they know how to design brakes that don't fade to nothing after one panic stop? Seriously, if I'm going 65 and slow to 15 real fast, I feel the pedal get hard, then the next time I use the brakes, it feels like I need to use more effort to get the same braking. Plus, the smell of fried brake pads sucks too. I thought about brake upgrades (for the front discs mainly) but I wanted to get an idea of what works best. I've heard that some cross drilled rotors tend to get heat stress cracks a little too easy (ironic, that's what it's supposed to prevent). So I'm thinking more along the line of powerslots. Also, what pads work best? I want to be able to get on the brakes over and over again (autocross duty) without them fading out. If anybody has a proven system, let me know what you did, please. I'll especially value the opinions of you auto X peeps. Thanks!

I would check out the brake combo on Gravana's website. For $240 you get Powerslot rotors, Hawk HPS pads, and Russell braided stainless lines.

I have the gravan tuning slotted rotors with hawks pads on both cavaliers. They are freaking awesome compared to stock and Jim is a great person to deal with.

EBC sloted rotors and Greenstuff pads. I used them for over a year with not one complaint. Very little fade after a good run, and alot less dust than over the counter pads.

The stock brakes on my sunfire will suck your eyes out... Did something change over the years, I have no complaints... I never notice any fading. The only thing that does bother me is in the rain they take a sec to really kick in, but that's probably because of my rims being so open.

It got to the point where I was getting scared to drive in the rain once I hit a puddle the brakes would fade and wouldn't even begin to stop me until I pumped them a bunch of times to dry them out enough. But now with the power slots and hawk pads its right then and there no waiting even through huge puddles. Plus when I took the old pads off they where starting to glaze over and crack so I was not impressed because I really didn't rag on them to bad so. It is like night and day because now the brakes out perform my stock tires so much that slamming on the brakes in dry weather will lock them right up when before it wouldn't. Plus the slots are far more appealling to me with 90% of the stock rotor area where as the cross-drilled are 70%-80% of the stock rotor area. The Hawk Pads where $10 more then the Raybestos Semi-Metallics with my cost at the local auto parts store here in the Vancouver area so it was well worth the $10 but the real test will be in how long they last. 5seconddrule I am suprised your stockers work so good because the bigger rims increase the rolling mass making ur brakes work harder and increasing ur stopping distance but if they work thas all that matters.

Im using Autozone Rotors and Morse Ceramic pads, and pretty decent braking except when coming down from high speeds (ie 70+) in a hurry, the fade is very apparent, no matter what. My old brakes sucked so bad, i thought i would rear end people trying to stop from like 40-50..

I went with brembo slotted rotors and autozones performance friction Z-rated bads and Russell lines and valvoline syn-power brake fluid. i have no fade that i have found! and it stops like a sports car!

see ya!

I've used the Greenstuff and the Ti22 pads, and liked both. For the $$ the Ti22 was a better value I found, as the Greenstuff were expensive and wore quickly, but stopped excellent. As for rotors, get something with some mass like the Gravana special, as the Inroble Sports rotors on my car now don't absorb heat as well as my old OEM slotted & cryoed rotors did.

the only time I had a real bad fade problem is when I raced a lexus is300, we were up to about 108 cut off and then I had to lay on my brakes real hard. It felt like I was never going to stop in time but once it slowed to like 60 it stopped quicker. But the stock brakes suck big balls. I'm going to get the most out of this set and then just pop for the bb upgrade front and rear, you never know when your going to need it.

I'm running gravana's special currently (with SS hoses)

I ran EBC greenstuff and EBC slotted rotors. With autocrossing roughly once a month, the pads lasted about a year and the rotors a year and a half. Cracked those rotors like mad I did

Jury's still out on the gravana set as far as longevity, but fade is definitely minimized, and modulation is greatly improved with the installation of SS hoses. And the pedal feel with that setup is awesome. With decent tires I can get -1.2Gs of stopping power with pretty much no fade for an entire autoX event. I think they stop a little better than greenstuff on EBC rotors, but that might be the hoses as much as anything.

What he said /\...also once they're warmed up they stick great to the rotor under braking, great for mutiple runs...have had them for 6 mnths now.

My power slots are warping as we speak. Still they whoop my stock brakes which felt like my Impala's 4 wheel drums!
Wish I could do something to bring them back into round.....

Thanks guys, as soon as I get some money to do something about it, I'll probably be giving Gravana a call.

ok I like the gravana site and the two package deals seem really good (powerslots and hawks) how important are the steel brake lines? are they worth the jump in cost? Id like to be able to just spend the $175 since I just figured out that I prolly have to buy new motor mounts and possibly a balljoint. but if its worth it its worth it!
