Bad vibrations
Wednesday, September 21, 2005 11:07 AM
Ya so im getting bad vibrations at like 65 mph. i just got my tires re-balanced a week ago. and its still the same. i know how to check wheel bearings. my front passenger has kinda alot of play in it.

will that bearing cause a lot of vibrations at 65mph?

can a bad tie rod do that? if so how do i check for a bad one?

can anything else cause it?

i dont think its a bad motor mount cause i can turn the car off and it still does it.

any help is much appreciated

Nick

does this only happen around 65mph? is there a ticking sound starting? i had the same problem, when i got to 45mph my car would shake terribly. had it on a left at meniki and found out one of my boots was torn open. got it replaced and havent had a problem

If it happens around 65 MPH, your wheels are out of balance, or you have another cause of a wheel shimmy---but 65MPH is usually unbalanced wheels. Also, try rotating your tires--it worked for me (but my shimmy was at 35-40)

I agree with the others so far. 65MPH+ sounds like out of ballance, or bad tires, odd wear...

If you noticed it at lower speeds, I might say CV joint. Or maybe if you hear poping/clacking noises.

Bad bearigs usually result in a highly annoying hum, as well as other minor vibrations.

Do you have all the same size/weight lug nuts?

It could be the tie rod too, but I think you would notice it while going slower as well.

Bad motor mounts you can usually tell while starting/stopping the engine, cause it will rock back and forth very badly.

ya well like i said i just had my rims balanced a week ago and there was no differance. i did have a problem with keeping my tire aired up right. it kept leaking. i fixed it though.

i will try to rotate my tire again to see if it helps it. i just rotated like a month or so ago. so i guess i will see tomorrow. i

will a bad trie cause that.. i just bought new ones not even 6 months ago. but like i said i did have a problem keeping the right pressure in it.

i do hear like a light grinding noise i think. or it might be a lit humming noise

First thing, you need to figure out why you can't keep air in it. My tires leak <5 psi per year. 1oz of nail going around in your tire will screw up the ballance.

The light humming could be a result of your tires. or it could be the bearing.

I still think you need to resolve the tire issues first.

Soapy water! Spray some around the bead of the tire, if it bubbles, that's where your leak is. Are you losing PSI or losing and gaining some due to fluctuations in temperature?

while your rotating your tires, check all the boots around the cv joints and all, check the tie rods too. make sure none of the boots are torn open

well i changed the bearing on the passenger side and my car is fine now. thats what it was so maybe its the same thing with u. but now i noticed that the boot on the cv joint ont he driver side is torn and the grease got out does that matter? should i change it. sorry to thread jack but yeah see if u can change ur wheel bearings cuz that was my problem

If you are using aftermarket wheels, are you using hubcentric rings?

Which direction is the play on the left front? Up and down or left to right? How much is "kinda alot of"?

Up and down- ball joint, strut to spindle bolts, strut, upper mount.

Left to right- inner or outer tie rod end, adjuster.

All directions- wheel bearing or combo of any of the above.

If you've fixed the leaky tire, rotate them to see if the problem moves. If it does, its that tire/wheel, if not, its the suspension/brakes on that corner. A bad tie rod end may be the problem at that speed, thats why we need to know the direction of play. Your problem might be several things all at once. Hubcentric rings shouldn't be an issue, as long as you are using wheels that require a conical nut.

OK so i rotated my tires yesterday. now the vibrations are not nearly as bad as it was.

so does that mean that it was one of my fronts is that way it vibrated so much and now that i moved it to the back it is less.

i thought there was a little play but now that i moved the rim to the back it doesnt seem to have much play at all now. does that sound weird or was i just tripping or summin.

i have aftermarket rims but one got bend so i had them put my old rim back on.

so im gonna just put my old ones back on cause the new ones are all scratched up anyways up anyways. so i will see next week when i get payed.

but now my car is much more drive able on the highways. i felt dumb guess i had to drive in the slow lane and people would be riding my azz. but hey what can i do? i had to drive like 30 miles to school and it was all highway driving

i would have eventually figured it out cause im in school for collision and repair, but i couldnt wait that long.

so thank you guys so much your the best.

i will let you know what happens when i get my old rims put on. see if that gets rid of the rest of my vibrations

thank you
