Brake Problems

I think my cavy ('96, 2.2L, A3, base coupe) has a problem,

i'll get in my car after it been parked for a while (hours) and when i hit the brakes only the rears feel liek they are grabbing. pumping the pedal doesn't do anything, in order to get the front to grab normally i have to stop quick enough to get the weight to shift forward (or maybe it's just something to do wiht the way I hit the pedal).

after it does this once it's good untill it gets parked for a few hours agian. i have only noticed it when it rains or gets cold, doesn't seem to happen when it's warm and wet, or warm and dry.

this also creates a problem when it's raining outside because the ABS kicks in really easily when just the rears feel like they are grabbing, but the front don't feel like they are doing anything.

any idea what the problem may be? thanks

How do you know that just the backs are grabbing?

I have owned two cavaliers now and both have done it (89 Z24; 99 Z24) I although have only noticed it after it has sit in rain or the brakes have been sitting after they have been driven in the rain. It stops doing it once I drive a minute on them and stop from a decent speed. I don't know why they do it?

i can feel it. if the front are grabbing they aren't helping to slow the car. all the stopping power if from the rear wheels.

Welcome to rear drums, if this happens after it rains, while raining or when it humid..then its normal
But it shouldn't do it all the time, maybe for the first 2 or so city stops
If its doing it all the time for pretty much every stop then I'd rip apart the drums and take a good look for things out of the ordinary(do a cleaning to see things better). Also check the front caliphers, see if the piston moves freely.
If after you've checked the front and rear brakes to find nothing faulty..I'd think you would be looking at a faulty master cylinder
