little help before the JCO

hey guys and gals,

so like i mentioned in posts before i have the D-specs with prokit installed on my car....

the past few days i noticed on some bumps that the passenger rear tire will make a loud bang.... at first i thought it was something loose for my exhaust... but is wasn't... emptied the trunk.. no changes....

now i did notice on the top of the d-specs that there was a sticky residue around the srtut mount.... almost rubbery... at first i thought that the shock was blown.. but i'm sure that the leakage would be slick and messy.... My final conclusion is that the strut mount is worn out already. does this sound right?

If so.. instead of getting another stock top mount... i remember reading that i can get a monroe strut mount? Where can i get this part in Ontario Canada.

Thanks for your help!

I couldn't say whether the monroe ones would work - probably would though.

But you could pick them up at any Canadian Tire.

Tokico's are gas struts not oil filled. I have the same issue with the banging noise but I'm still stumped with what it is.

i tired looking at everything that is could be.. something loose and what not. everything is snug. do the strut mounts have a rubber bushing that could have worn out? is that the black residue that i'm getting on my fingers?

my car has an appointment with my mechanic tomorrow... i'm pretty sure its the top strut mount.. i'll know for sure tomorrow i hope and will post the results.

i just hope that there isn't any damage to the strut

The rear strut mounts definitely could cause this.

They have a metal sleeve set into a plastic/rubber surround. On mine, that rubber had about the consistency of thick play-doh. I could pick it off and roll it into little balls and I could slide the metal sleeve right out of them. It was potentially very dangerous.

To check if this is the problem, you can remove your rear assembly completely and have a look at the mounts. You don't need an alignment after this since there's nothing adjustable in the rear.

WW... thats exactly what my situation is. thanks!

did you have any damage to your strut? i noticed this friday when i was already in Toronto for the weekend.... no one was able to look at the car until Wednesday back here in Woodstock. i set everything to the softest setting and very seldom did the bang occur.

now i just hope it will be ready in time for saturday

Should have dropped by. Hell, we fixed everyone else's cars over the weekend... yours would have just been icing on the cake.

I doubt there's any damage to your struts unless they've burst right through. If they did that, you'd be able to see the problem clearly.

As it is, they'll just have too much play in the mount and, if that's the case, you HAVE to fix the problem ASAP before they do end up coming out.

I've still got the original mounts in mine. We packed them with washers to ensure they'd hold together. Your best bet though is to pick up a new set.

Again.... take them out and have a look at them before spending any money. Diagnosing stuff like this without actually seeing it isn't the most accurate way to do things.

I had that situation infront. Though my front mounts were finnished but turned out to be a space between the shocks and the mount itself. So shock were banging on top of the mount. When they put in my new Goldline springs they put between them a shim of metal and now my problem is solved.
