lowering for a cheap s.o.b.
Sunday, January 01, 2012 9:45 PM
just wondering if there are any springs from other cars that would fit our spring perches, ideally a smaller spring to drop the car for wayyy less money. reason i ask is i have easy acess to my friendly neighborhood salvage yard and because cheapass haha. if springs off a sprint or something would work, thatd be cool. anyone know?or is there something im overlooking?

thanks

Brand name springs are already fairly cheap starting around $200, its the struts to handle the lowering springs that are around $400+
Save the money and do it right or don't do it at all.

Springs that are stock are designed just like aftermarket springs, specifically for that car. just find a used set of eibachs.

you can always just take the springs out of those mechanical pens and put them on your stock struts...then your ride will be super low...haha

Take a torch and heat your stock springs until you have the desired height.

In short you are not going to find a "cheap" way of lowering with out having terrible ride quality. "Cheapest" way is gonna be buying a used set up.

I see three options.

1. Don't knock people giving you dumb ideas, you're the cheap @!#$ to begin with.

2. Don't lower your car.

3. Spend some money and quit trying to hack something together.

Used to be able to buy these coil spring compressors or you could use them to strech them taller with these hardened steel gizzmo's bought from auto zoo or advance auto. They were cheap also. I have no idea about the saftey or if they are even worth a damn.

chop your stockers.. just take them out and cut a coil out and put them back in.. people have been doing it forever and you get the benefit of a slightly stiffer spring rate.
it gets complicated when you have a tapered spring, but there are ways to chop them, too, that involve cutting them, submerging the coil in a bucket of water so that only the last coil is sticking out, heating the exposed coil with a torch until red hot, and twisting it to the proper shape with a big pliers.
yeah, i know.. death wish yada yada..
