brake booster upgrade

PJ's post has got me thinking. Does anyone know of a lower profile brake booster that is a direct fit for our cars? Anyone done this?

(Looks like GTPSunfire mentioned a chevette power brake booster, anyone know what the dimensions of this one are?)

I'm doing a hydraulic brake booster on my car....very much smaller in diameter but a little longer...but perfect for a wilwood 1" bore master. Gonna be running it off the PS pump.

Do you have any more info? I'm already running a stock GM 1" bore master cylinder.

Look for a brake booster used in late model 00-03 full size GM SUV's. The one I got is two bolt and havn't had a chance to bolt it up yet. Not sure if it will work without modification...but to me that really doesn't matter. It's not hard to weld a plate and drill new holes and even shorten/lengthen the push rod if needed. The one I used was from a much older model vehicle...not sure which one now, but it was the smallest footprint and the only one that can hold back 3.5k psi(from the small amount of specs that I have found searching around the net) which matches well with the new PS pump I will be running. Now I just gotta get a pressure/flow control stack valve setup to allow the rack to operate and I'll be all set. I'd suggest getting a high output PS pump if your seriously interested as even the big saginaw's in the SUV's were running out of pump when you turned the wheel quickly while on the brakes.

Same thing, just in a 2nd gen. I haven't done any plumbing, its all in storage since I'm back in Iraq.

I flipped the booster upside down from the factory mounting to clear my 3400. The hydrobooster takes up a ton less space than the factory vacuum.

I lost my edit button due to not paying my premium bill.....

Anyways, this was one of the easiest bracket fabs I ever did. To alleviate the pushrod issue, just cut the pedal end off, have it threaded and use a clevis from your local hardware store. Then you can adjust pedal height as well. I'm running an N body MC. Just about every GM "small" MC will bolt up to this hydroboost. Google search hydroboost plumbing and installs and you'll find a ton of people who have done this. Its popular in S dimes to clear big tires.

the only thing i don't like about the hydro-boost is it still sticks into the engine bay A LOT

manual conversion would take like 4" off the intrusion into the engine bay.. and now that I figured out how to modify brake pedals, you can use it with stock brakes

how difficult it would be depends on how you do it, but some custom plumbing, a different MC, and a prop valve for the rear and you're good to go (add metering valve for the fronts and residual pressure for the rear if you're disc/drum) thats all

been looking at those funky combination valves too, but decided on something a little different.
full disc has it really easy so far as plumbing.. just need a prop valve for the rears and you're golden.

I've already deleted my ABS and have 4 wheel disc brakes. I'm just trying to make more room in the engine bay. PJ, I have yet to take apart my stock brake pedal assembly and honestly couldn't tell from your pictures in the other thread what you had modified.

In the other thread GTPSunfire mentioned using a Chevette booster. After a little digging I found that this is only a single diaphram unit whereas the j-body booster is a dual diaphram (twice the pressure). That fact coupled with the size difference (chevette unit is roughly 2" smaller in diameter) has me thinking that maybe it's not such a viable option. The chevette unit would be about 40% as effective as the cavalier booster.
