If my power steering pump failed, is it bad for any other parts to drive it like that? I mean, i know it's hard on my arms lol, but will i break anything else by not getting it fixed ASAP?

if the pump's toast, then it's generally ok.

Steering column linkage may get a bit stressed unless you do a loop through.
Other than that, no.

Just make sure there is still fluid in the pump or the bearings will take a dump and the pulley will seize. Seen that happen before on a friends 2.2 cavy, he looped the lines on the rack and drained the pump and then the pump siezed.

So this is the p/s pump on a 2004 ecotec. I took off the pump today to find that the drive sheared off. I guess that means either the pump seized or the mechanism that drive the shaft seized. Which do you guys think it is? What exactly drives the power steering pump on an eco? Camshaft/timing chain?

theres a gear/cog on the end of the intake cam that the shaft of the pump goes into. if there is no shaft on the engine side of the pump then the pump took a dump, if it was the cog on the intake cam, it would most likely came out with the pump when you removed it. you can check by sticking your finger in the hole and see if the cog moves, it shouldn't, look in the hole if its all smooth in there the cog came out, it should look like a 6pt socket.

I have snapped a few PS pump shafts on my 2.4's. Its not that uncommon to happen.

Fixed with the second replacement pump. The first one must have been legitimately bad, but that's what lifetime warrenties are for right?

I now appreciate how bad my first power steering pump must have been. I can practically steer the car with two fingures now
