clunking over bumps in road

1995 Sunfire sedan

There is a loud clunking or banging noise coming from my passenger rear strut tower whenever i go over bumps or potholes, etc. From searching this site, I've discovered it might be the rear strut mount?

When I looked at the top of the strut tower, the rubber cap (or whatever it is) is no longer attached and is laying in the trunk. That's never good. I can see whatever is in there (the strut i'm assuming) squeeze up and down from the hole where the cap was. My question is... is it safe to even drive? I just spent $600+ getting the head and head gasket replaced, I don't have the money to get this clunking fixed right away.

Yea you can drive like that if you want. You just have to deal with the noise. Mounts are about 50 a piece
