KYB AGX work for mild drop (1.5" or so)
Koni works for however low you want to go so long as you aren't bottoming out.

Some have said that Tokico D-Spec works for mild drops as well. KYB GR2 are NOT drop compatible. GR2's are OEM spec replacements.

Personally I would save a little more ($800 mark) so you can go with konis and springs (either go for the Koni kit, or get Eibachs). If you want full coilovers you're going to need at least twice what you've currently got budgeted, but if you read much on here, people really like coilover setups.

Examples of good coilover setups (as determined from here, I only ever had the Koni Sport kit springs/struts)
Koni struts with Ground Control
Gravana Tuning's coilovers
Tein SS

A new player on the block is STD, which has me quite interested, but coils seem to START at $1200 (but they are height adjustable, as well as damping adjustable on most, which is cool).

dspecs are just as good as konis and maybe better for more inexperienced people since they are direct replacements and konis are not.

for a little over your budget I say go with tein basics excellent set of coilovers for a very good price. If your car is just a dd with the weekend track days they would work for you perfectly.

the fronts are only insert which means you have to cut your stock strut above the knuckle so you can use the knuckle part on the koni

tokiko hp's are also a stock replacement. some people say they can handle a small drop, but i would stick with d-specs.

theres an faq at the top of this forum. there is a list of all struts for our cars and what they can handle, plus there is a list of all lowering springs (with their drop size) and coilovers.

if you search this forum, you'll see some threads about that exact combo. like john said people say that it works and that tokico even warranties it. i cant really argue with them since i havent heard anything from tokico myself. last i heard about those struts though, they were just oem replacements

hmmm according to tokico they are performance struts... and they will warrenty up to a 2 inch drop if you cut the bump stop to their specification

the 1.4 in springs they have are made by canuck motor sports, they are manufactured right here in Surrey, BC (canada).

I bought the Tokico HP strut and spring kit (HPK-291) a month ago and I'm satisfied. It appeared to be well made, installed easily, and Tokico warranties it with the drop they specified. For overall value, I recommend it. That being said, there are lots of more performance oriented people here with other recommendations that bear looking at if they're closer to your goal. - Mark

thats the best thing about it. i always thought they were oem replacemens but if tokico is willing to warranty it then go for it. the sell it with their springs.

I too have the Tokico HPK-291 kit. It's a good kit, many say the HP aren't a performance strut, but that started out because they aren't adjustable. They are a far more performance valving than the KYB GR-2s and definitely more than the stockers. They did make some concessions and kept the valving relatively streetable. In other words, it could be called a street performance strut. The ride is good, not too harsh, though firmer than the before mentioned struts. (Ride firmness is subjective and is different with every person.) Some think the ride is too firm, but I'm good with it. It is definitely more controlled than the stock suspension.

If your not sure how firm you want, try the KYB AGX & Eibach Pro Kit. This will give you the same drop, but have some adjustability. The cost will probably push the limits of your budget, but still a fairly economical system. This is a well proven set-up and can be adjusted for your needs at any particular time(luxury, DD, drag race or Auto-X).

The least expensive set-up I was able to come up with was either the Tein H-Techs (0.9"/1.1" drop) or the Suspension Techniques (1.2" F/R drop) with something like a GR-2 strut (I wouldn't use the GR-2 on anything but these springs or the stockers, they aren't valved firm enough for anything more than these, but slightly firmer than stock.) The drop would be very mild (barely noticeable)and so would the ride(luxury soft?).

For everyone on the roads safety, don't use anything but stock spring on the stock struts!

In the instructions with the pro kit, it should tell you what you have to do to install the springs, Like if you have to trim the bump stop or anything like that.
