i was installing goldline springs on the j today and the smaller diameter part of the spring goes on the top right? if not the bearing plate totally misses the top of the spring, and if the smaller part goes on the top then the word goldline on the springs is printed upside down.
just been on bags so long i haven't done springs on the car in forever!

Sounds like you are missing the top seat insulator. this is a rubber grommet that goes over the spring in the front. Without it, the bearing just drops thru the top of the spring. I know I had this as a problem, b4 i figured it out. Check this out for pictures.
