abs cutting in early

The abs on my 02 sunfire seems to come into play early i'll step on the brake and sometimes it'll just activate. is there something i can do to smooth out the problem. feels like i got no abs at all sometimes too

you shouldnt ever feel like you have ABS until you lock up your wheels.

If your abs is kicking in when you are doing light braking, there are several causes, from faulty wheel speed sensors, to fluid leaks in the abs unit, air in the lines, etc.

hmmm any way to figure out what it might be without driving it to the mechanic and have him tell me the same thing?

no, it would be relatively easy with the right scanner hooked up.....see if any wss are dropping out when it does it, etc, diag from there.

If a WSS was dropping out the ABS light would come on, he makes no indication of it. I honestly think there's nothing wrong, and he just doesn't know how ABS works.

that also could be a posibility. but a wss sensor can drop out under some circumstances without triggering a light, causing early engagement.

Over here there's a lot of potholes, and if I hit the brakes as I'm driving over one, my abs will usually go off. See if it's all the time, or just crappy streets.

Crappy roads with pot holes will trigger it, the inch or so one tire travels down as well as forward is enough to throw the sensors off because of the speed difference in the wheels while braking.

If its not crappy roads I'd vote for faulty wheel speed sensors, a quick scanner hookup will tell you if the sensors are going bad.

i replaced my tires with some new stickier all season tires and it calmed down my ABS a lot. better traction, less ABS involvement. just a thought.
