Ok, I have a 2004 cavalier ls (ecotec, 16in alloys, all he niceities that were available) and have had the dealer replace my strut mounts about every 20,000 miles, I am not lowering the car or doing anything wih the suspension, I have seen several chats on here dictated towards how crappy these strut mounts are. My question to everyone on here for the most part is who makes a good strut mount for these cars (front and rear) for regular everyday driving (I do a good mix of around town and highway driving), I am not looking to race this car or lower it, just want it to stick to the road and eliminate little quirks. I know I have seen it mentioned to use the 95-99 strut mounts, but it seemed someone also said that the 99-05 strut mounts lower the car some, I don't want to change the ride height or affect the handling dynamic at all, just something more durable that might last 60-80K miles, I dont feel like changing strut mounts every 4th oil change.
Also, who makes a good everyday strut (with slight upgrade in performace (again not looking to lower the car or compete it)). Something that might give the car a little bit more aggression in the handling department then the stock struts, or if anyone just makes a good replacement strut for these cars.
Thanks to everyone who can lend a hand here, much appreciated.
the 95-99 mounts wont lower your car. its the same as the 00+ mounts except the 95-99 are a 3 piece mount and not a 1 piece like the 00+
for better struts you can get kyb gr2 struts. they are stock replacements but are a little bit better than the oem struts
Is this true for both the front and rear strut mounts or just the front strut mounts?
And with regards to the KYBs I have concerns about their struts, I work on thirdgen camaros and firebirds, and alot of people using GR2s have problems with them dying in a year. Any other companies with good reputations and people have favorable results, I have also had bad luck with monroes which I used to have on my 77 nova. I wish Billstein made struts for the cavailier but no such luck their.
Thanks for your response
KYB AGX would be a good choice for you...
As for the mounts, IMO the 95-99 front mounts are definately a better design. The rears are the same 95-05 though.
I have 75K abusive miles and I've never had to replace my strut mounts. I'm lowered AND racing my car. I think you or the dealer is doing something wrong if yours are bad every 20K
I used to race cars, now I race myself.
5K PB: 24:50
10K PB: 54:26
thanks for the replies, an hypsy, I haven't done anything to the car, it is possible that my GM dealer did not address the service bullittin concerning this car when the mounts were replaced the first time and maybe they will this time, but that doesnt address the longterm issue, I guess congrats on your strut mounts lasting that long? but that doesn't really help me out.
What are people's feelings towards tokico and koni struts, do they make a nice daily driver strut?
And are there any aftermarket companies that make nice 95-99 strut mounts?
Thanks again for all the responses, they are much appreciated, I am heavy into 3rd gen irocs, z28s, gtas, and trans ams, so my experience dealing with the "known problems" and parts sources for these cars is very limited, only thing not stock on this car is the oil and the yokohoma avid v4s tires I recently put on, haha.
