how long do your brakes last ?
Thursday, July 24, 2008 3:50 PM
Hey I got an '05 Cav i bought new. I am an older person with an easy 41 mile commute to work one way, all highway mile. I don't drive her hard. At 78,321 mile I now have to replace them, some jerk cut me off at the toll plaza and they are warped now. This is her first brake job. I might drive 14 city miles every week max.

So anyone out there with a similar experiance?

Yea thats why I was asking. I was kind of wondering about driving habbits. I do a lot of coasting up to toll plazas, traffic lights & stop signs.

When the rotors warped it was the fist time I ever had to pounce on them. She is my commuter car to work, on weekends,I drive an suv. I have never ever owend a car that went so far on original brakes!.

Does autozone sell good stuff? I need to do them this weekend.

p.s. it is same for the rears - never been replaced.

just dont buy the economy pads and you're fine. when you really want your car to stop, would you trust something you paid $15 for? i know i dont.

Yeah usually 30k at most for stock J brakes.

I know the rears on mine still had about 1/2 shoe left when I hacked them off for the disc swap. that was 80k+

but thats crazy for the fronts. i go through a set 20-30k.

I'm at 95k on my rears. Done the fronts a good 3-4 times.

Maybe 30-35K for fronts, still have no idea on the rears. I think teh worst I did was 25K on a set of HPS pads and Baer rotors.

my front pads lasted 80k miles. I had the rotors resurfaced and they were good to go and everything was still passing at 120k miles when i got rid of it. The rears lasted about 110k. Its all in your driving habits. I downshift (properly) when slowing down and for the most part dont use the brakes below 20mph, except obvious emergency stops. Also, don't accelerate hard to the next stop light, because you're gonna use the brake harder.

My 02 still has its stock breaks/break pads... it has almost 60k on it, and my 04 Eco is at 66K and is still on stock breaks/pads as well.

I am finally needing pads/rotors on all 4 corners. They have 68k on them And i race and its all city driving.

Gotta love the Wilwood brakes and the Baer brakes in the bake

The fastest way to warp any rotor is to heat them up real good and then sit still with your foot on the break. The pads when clamped on the rotor keeps it hot under the pad while the rest of the rotor cools down.

The problem with our front brakes is usually calipers start sticking and one pad ends up worn to nothing and the other still has 60% remaining...also the brakes are undersized so pads wear pretty quick, for automatics anyhow, manuals can get a lot more life out of them unless you drive like a jerk

Don't buy from MANTAPART!!

Rotors dont warp...Pad material is simply unevenely deposited, ITs simply a thickness variation. (In the case of a long hot stop and clamping the pads while everything is hot on the rotors) or the surface of the rotor is distorted by pad clamping after a long hard stop.

78k is damn good... You treat it well obviously. Brakes are modulated strictly by the driver so their lifetime is 100% dependant on the drivers habits alone.

I would go with the best Semi Mettalics you can find...you'll pay about 60 bucks but it'll be worth it...make sure you grab some anti seize compound and lube everything that has metal touching metal on the calipers and slides. SAme with rotors...get the premiums and you'll get another solid 60k out of a brake job.
