Are they a must, or do they just make it easier?
air tools make everything easier
Just make it easier. Which is to say, may save you some scrapes, bruises, and psychological damage. But I feel your pain ... I don't have air tools either. Definitely worth getting once you can afford them though .... you'll save money in the long run with all the things you can do with them.
not needed at all. its handy but its not a requirement
the only thing thats a real pain is getting the nut on top of the strut tight since the strut will spin. do a search beacause i know a few people had suggestions on how to do it w/o air
I use a powerful electric impact wrench for those.
i did my drop without any air tools, it wasnt that bad
hop on in i've got a J

if your talking about getting the bolts on the piston rods tight without the strut spinning, i used a gear wrench to tighten and a crescent wrench to hold the top of the piston rod from spinning. for the rears anyway. the fronts just tightened no problem.

i did my drop without air tools too...
for the bolts on the piston rod, loosen them before you jack the car up. (loosen, do NOT completely remove)
put the weight of the car back on them to tighten them back up.
it should keep the strut shaft from spinning.

my stock rears were so rusted i couldnt get the bolt off, a buddy had to use one of them air tools with a circular blade on it to cut the nut in 4ths to get it off lol.
