is there a tool for this or what do I need to do to find out if it really bent or if the shop was trying to screw me over?

Only way to tell is to get an alignment. Usually a shop will write a knuckle if your tire took a good enough hit to push the suspension around. It may not look bent but that can be deceiving. Things like your camber or your caster will be off if not replaced. If you did not replace the knuckle then you most likely will have problems in the future with tire wear.
