Trac off and braking problem.
Thursday, October 11, 2007 11:46 AM
Well, my wife tells me that the car has been having a problem when she brakes for the last couple of days. This morning, I drove the car around the block and found out what she's talking about. Not all the time but a lot, when coming to a stop, the trac off light will come on and I can hear and feel something from the brake pedal. I checked the brake fluid and it's full. It worries me because she uses the car everyday and we have a baby. Anyone have an idea of what it can be?

The traction off light is related to wheel speed sensors. The computer will disable the traction control system when it detects an error in that system. It also disable that system when it detects that the emergency brake lever is engaged.

I would start by pulling the front wheels off and inspecting the front brakes.

Does the ABS light come on? Is the noise only in the pedal or does it come from the wheels?

I expexted it to come on but the ABS light doesn't come on. The noise is felt/heard from brake pedal.

my trac light comes on as well randomly, but more so first thing in the morning, aslo when I brake under 10mph when the car is still cold my back brakes are applied harder than my front. ( the back of the car drops down) but this goes away after I make it down the road. I tested this on some gravel at low speeds, and sure enough the back wheels lock up and drag. dont know if you have this problem or not... I just let the car warm up all the way now before I put it in drive and the brakes work fine.

Well, the first thing I would do is inspect the brake system. If all is well with the pads/rotors and shoes/drums I would flush the entire system with new fluid. If that doesn't fix the problem, I would go pull a master cylinder from a junk yard (make sure it is off another car with abs) and put that in. If that doesn't fix the problem, I would replace the ABS module found under the dash on the drivers side with one from the junkyard.

Forgot something: I would replace the brake calipers and wheel cylinders before I replaced the master cylinder. I'd probably do new pads/rotors and shoes/drums while I was there-- unless your components are fairly new.

All components are no more than 3 months old. I actually flushed out the system when I did the front brakes.
