brake noise after new pads and rotors...
Friday, August 17, 2007 3:35 AM
Ok, 2 weeks ago i had my front pads and rotors replaced at Tire Kingdom. Ive driven about 900 miles since then and 2 days ago i started to get a groaning type noise from one side when coming to a stop. its really annoying and a bit embarrasing. Any ideas on what it may be before i take it back in and they start telling me "you need new calipers", or new whatevers...

thanks

stops as well as OE style hardware can, no shakes or pulls or anything. doesnt appear to be any metal contact either, the rotor isnt marked or scarred. just makes a nasty groan kinda noise...sounds like a semi truck coming to a stop.

try holding the pedal down jsut a bit and drive forward get some sow friction on it, there might be somethign caught in the pad...pull of the calipers make sure nothing is in there

I recently swapped some second-hand tires onto my car, and found the new tread pattern caused a distinctive groan under braking. Perhaps a silly suggestion, but could there be a problem with tire pressure on that side? Another idea that came to mind is that a wheel bearing on its way one might do something like you're describing.

tires should be fine, they are in great shape. im kinda wondering if maybe one of the pads is crooked or jammed a bit and only making slight contact. i dont get much if any noise when i stop pretty quick.hard, but if i kinda roll normal to a stop they groan/screech like a dump trucks air brakes for maybe the last 5 feet.

i would thing a wheel bearing would give some other indicator as well, like a shake or pulse, also arent they known to make a bit of noise while driving as well? this side also wore out the old pads/rotors faster than the other...so i kinda betting theres a caliper or piston problem...maybe a pad isnt making full contact and its causing some noise...i may jack it up and take off the wheel to do a little investigating before i bring it to the shop. im very broke and cant play the "replace parts till we get it right" game.

anyone else feel free to chime in on this...any ideas help...

ok, i did a little test on the wheels. got the same result for both driver and pass side. i jacked the car up. if i held the wheel on top and bottom i could rock it a little bit. if i held the sides i couldnt rock either wheels, also if i tried pullin out or pushing in a couldnt move either wheel. so im kinda doubting itsa bearing, or both are bad, cause each side was identical.

i didnt get result from the driving test, as my exhaust cases to much resonation with the windows up, and the wind noise is too much with them down to hear anything. i did drive past a large stone wall, did get any noticable "snow tire" or "4x4 tire" noises, which im told would indicate a bearing problem.

so im left with it still bein a pad, rotor, or caliper issue...

still would appreciate any ideas....

Just a suggestion, maybe they forgot to grease the back of the pads.

Did you by chance break the pads in? You normally don't HAVE to do that for them to opperate, but it sure helps. I'd go in there and ask them what it could be, and don't pay them anything until you're sure that they're right and that they can fix it. It just seems kind of odd how it's happening after 900 miles on the new pads and rotors. If it's a groan, it sounds like the pad is gripping and then sliding then gripping and sliding until you stop. By breaking in the pads, it makes the pad and rotor flush against eachother and adds a film onto the rotor so the pad has an even surface to stick to. Logically, that sounds like your problem, but it should have shown up right after the service was performed. Aside from that, it's stumped me.

actually they greased the ish out of the backs, in thinking maybe a chunk got onto the frictions surface.

Its definately a slip-stick situation. you can tell by the rotor marks. drivers side has nice even circles around the rotor. the passenger side looks almost spoked...you cann see the shiny spots where its slipping, and the worn spots where its gripping.

i didnt do any break in.

im gonna take it back this weekend and see what they are gonna do. maybe ill get a nw set of pads outa them. if not im gonna buy some EBC greens and change them myself.

Cheap brake places use cheap parts. I work at a Toyota dealer and I have (a number of times) seen customers come in with a brake concern only to find out that they got "'lifetime pads' from Just Brakes for $99.88". Those pads might last as long as the car because they're so hard, but you'll have to replace your rotors a couple of times, and don't bother trying to stop in a hurry...
I've never heard of Tire Kingdom (maybe it's a regional thing), but I would bet you got cheap parts. whether or not that's the cause of the noise, it might be a good idea to go to Hawk, EBC, or even GM Factory pads, and get the rotors machined (again, right? you did get them machined with that brake job... right?). Actually, if you got them machined before, that might be another possible cause of your problem if the machining was done wrong.

if you have a humming noise coming from your wheels, that means your wheel bearing is bad. my guess is they probably never changed your pads. id pull the caliper off and look at the pads.
