I'm having a hard time understanding the axle situation.....

im doing the 3400 swap... and using a getrag 5-speed along with it

now im going to get the parts for the n-body swap here next week, so what do i really need here as far as axles go, so its done right?

Has anyone figured out if the N-body tierods are bigger than the J-body tie rods? I was looking at a full N-body setup the other day, and when the bolt is tight, it seems as if the N-body bolt fits nicely with room for the boot. When tightening my J-body tie rod bolt against the N-body knuckle, it comes down pretty far, almost completely collapsing the boot (I end up backing up a little bit). What possible damage could we be causing having the boot so collapsed?

you could break the seal or tear the boot... causing the grease to come out and destroying the balljoint over time

Yes, the N-body (Pontiac and Olds) have always had a 5 speed version.

'99+ 5 speed axles N-body Axles
AutoZone
Duralast CV Halfshaft Left 9467 $69.99 (+$25.00Core)
Duralast CV Halfshaft Right 9466 $69.99 (+$25.00Core)

AdvanceAuto
Cardone CV Halfshaft Left 601336 $103.99 (+$50.00 core)
Cardone CV Halfshaft Right 601337 $103.99 (+$50.00 core)

And again, Tom (WrenchMonkey) just swapped a AutoZone DR Side N-body axle into his car, and when measured (laying on the ground, side by side) the N-body axle was shorter then the Hybrid (J axle, N outer) axle. We have not yet tried to use the Pas. side axle yet. I will probably swap axles after winter (if mine hold up that long).

This weekend I finished the install of my 13" C5 Corvette brakes on my SS. Install went very well, and actually was easier than I expected. Worst part was SAWING the car!

By far, probably the best bang for your buck when it comes to a brake upgrade. You could actually save a little money on a LS-1 and reuse the OEM caliper since it is the exact same size, just use new 13" rotors for a vette, the adapters, vette brake line, vette brake bracket and pads.

I splurged and bought the Baer Eradispeed 2 peice rotors for a little more appearance "Bling".

Alright guys:

So, i have a loud thumping noise coming from the driver side when doing a soft right turn. After reading wrench's post, it seems like the n-body axle might be a solution. i think my inner tripod cv might be bad, seeing as both outer cv's are new on my hybrid axles. now, he only did the driver side, has anyone successfully done the passenger side? i know bobby was looking into changing both (and he also has an auto tranny). i really dont know whats up, but i've been driving with this clicking for a few months now and have no real other solution. i've done long trips with no problems, i just fear one day me getting stranded in the middle of the highway if something blows up.

any ideas? anybody swapped both full nbody axles? whats the worst that can happen with this clicking?

UPDATE!!!!!!

Make 100% sure you use hte Nbody tie rod ends... the jbody ones are NOT safe to use there is too much play in them and cause a nasty clunk.

So recap. We can use the N-body alxe with the J-body control arm?

Also we need the N-body ball joint for the N-body spindles?

Couple questions:

1. Will this setup push the wheel out further than stock?

2. Are the wheel hubs that are dual drilled for two sets of studs for sure 5 x 100 and 5 x 115?

3. So if I wanted to use the stock wheels on the nbody hubs, I would just need to bore out the center on the stock wheels? Anyone done this? Comments?

Thanks.

1) I don't think it pushed mine out at all (at least, not enough for me to notice)
2) Nope, and in fact, I think I found somewhere that they might be 5X110.
3) No, because even if you did get the bolts and hub to work, the stock 16's WILL NOT fit due to the inward spoke design. I did a lot of measuring

Thanks.

I just checked what the bearing fits on ebay... an 04- 05 malibu classic uses 5x 110 bolt pattern.

What I want to do is use 17 inch 5x100 rims (and if I can get the stock rims to work with spacers is a plus) and N-body brakes.
Are the OE hubs dual drilled 5x115 and 5x110? If so can you drill another set of holes 5x100? Would it be safe to have 3 sets of holes drilled?

The Malibu Classic is the old N-body..... it has a 5x115 bolt pattern, the new Malibu (and Malibu Maxx) uses the 5x110 pattern.
