Tire Rub w/ Road Magnets

At the time of install I didn't have problems since the springs had to settle. After about a month I started to hear rubbing, but its only ever occurred while I was turning. When you look at the car from the side the rear is sitting normal (3 fingers), but the front you can barely get one finger in between the tire and the fender.

I'm using Koni Yellow struts for the setup so nothing out of the ordinary there. I believe those are the ones you recommend with those springs. They don't bounce so I know they aren't blown. The tires on the car are the stock size 205/55-16 so I'm really lost here.

The other problem I have occurs when I hit even small bumps at the speed limit. Granted it doesn't happen all the time, but as usual more than you would expect. When I hit them it almost sounds like the front is bottoming out, but more than likely its the tires hitting the fender even though I can't find any marks on the fender itself.

As you can see in the picture I don't have stock rims on the car. The ones you see came with the car when I got it. I did some research and came to find out that they are Kazara KZ-U 16x7 rims that, like the stock tire, use the 204/55-16 tire size. These come up as a direct fit option on Tire Rack.

If you could lend me a hand in figuring out why I'm having this problem it would be greatly appreciated.

Roadmagnet is located here in Bmore. I personally know the owner, Mark. I will give him a call and let him know about your problem.
Naturally, I have to ask you the offset of the rims on your car as they look to be sticking out further than normal but that may just be the pictures.
You could always just roll the fenders in the front but you shouldn't be forced to do so. I will find out if anybody else had reported similar problems and let you know what I find.

Did you get an alignment after you installed your suspension goodies?

I have no rub/bottoming issues at all. I run a 225/50/16 on the stock rims. They can be kind of squeaky but thats it.

Yeah, I will remove a tire and hope the offset is on the inside. These wheels came with the car so I don't know much about them other than they are Kazara KU-7 or something similar to that. They are on tire rack. I have e-mailed Road Magnet as well, but thanks for going out of your way for me.

Yes I did get the car realigned after putting the springs on, no I didn't get it realigned after adding sway bars. Should I though?

BUMP

just because they say the rims are the right fit , DOESNT MEAN THEY ARE

they go by the car sitting at stock height , not lowered when they make those statements

it has little to nothing to do with the springs being bad , they are drop springs , you lower it and you gotta expect it

hell the eibach prokit on my g/fs eco , the stock 16's rubbed when fully lock on the steering , my 17's rubbed at full lock also

its all on wheel offset and the tires

Zach,
I have some answers for you. Everything looks normal to us. The rear sits a little higher to allow for extra weight of stereo equipment or passengers. That is the way the stock springs are too. The rubbing sound and the sound when you hit bumps is the plastic splash guard. Most people cut that spot out of the splash guard. If you jack up the car you should be able to see the spot on the splash guard and you can just trim it away with a razor knife. The rubbing should go away. Let me know if that doesn't solve the problem.

Mark Habicht

So should I be doing what he tells me to then? Seems weird, but what ever works I guess. If the cluck is the tire hitting the splash gaurd they made the damn thing more than thick enough .

Remove the splash guard and see if that's the problem before you go trimming it.

Alright will do. BTW...I do see scrapes on the top outside of the tire. May just have to tub the fenders. I'll try removing the splash guards tomorrow as suggested.

Just to correct myself the car makes a loud clunk when it hits certain bumps...it does not cluck lol

Clunk doesn't sound like a splash guard. Sounds like a bushing, ball joint, or strut mount. Sometimes things that I just listed that are still quiet with the stock springs because they are softer. When you put lowering springs on, the bumps are transfered to the chassis harder due to a higher spring rate, so something loose will clunk when it didn't before.

a rubbing sound would sound almost like scraping.....if u are hearing a clunking sound then ur problem is elsewhere.

The rubbing is the tire on the fenders. I have marks just outside the treads to prove that. I'll check the mounts when I replace the struts, but they were replaced when I switched from Goldlines to Road Magnets. No sounds prior to swap by the way. How can I tell if the ball joint is shot or not? Also, if the Team Green guys ever have time they will be installing the prothane control arm bushings I have had for about 6 months.

clunking when turning means your spring is binding up and not seated properly

Sorry to thread jack, but what does a squeaking sound mean whenever I hit a bump or the road is uneven. Anytime I am not on flat road the fronts squeak pretty bad. Shocks were brand new too. You have any problems like this villiagemon?

strut mounts

They never did squeak on stock springs/struts though. And it started the day I installed the new springs/struts.

If it is a strut mount issue, the most likely time for you to have broken them is during the install.

Nope...haven't had that problem yet. Mine squeak constantly right now because they are blown, but prior to being blown they never squeaked.

The offset for the rims is 40mm by the way. As strippedcav98 already informed me I should be fine with that offset since the rim is only 16x7, which means replacing the struts should solve my problem.

i highly doubt its the struts. many people run them with no problems at all. was the car ever in an accident? something could be bent underneth the car causing the wheel to sit like that.
