Hi
I'm looking for input seting up my 2.2 96 cavalier at a local asphalt track 3/8 mile highbank.. It is a hornet class .I can only run 195/70 r14 or 185/70r13 tires ,no stager allowed all 4 tires must remain the same size, suspension must "appear" stock. turns mid 20's to low 21's. with factory alignment specs. I need to get her into the 19's to be competative. it is a blast ,this thing rocks on dirt.. but I'm new to asphalt racing..
any info springs /tire/alignment or anything greatly appreciated
thanks,
George
I don't know the factory 96 alignment specs off hand, but if there is enough toe adjustment, set the left toe all the way out and the right as far out as the cross toe will allow. Don't set the right all the way in, or you will scrub off speed and loose traction (not good on the outside tire). Set the left caster as far back as possible, and the right as far forward as possible. Keep your left camber somewhere around 0, and get as much negative on the right side as possible. There really isn't any thing you can do with the rear specs because its a trailing beam. As far as springs goes, you can swap in some stiffer springs on the right side. I don't know all the 3rd gen sets available, but the Eibach Sportlines come to mind as a "stock looking" spring you can paint black. If you run the 185/70r13s, you might be able to pick up a few tenths. Smaller diameter= more revolutions at the same engine speed. Also play around with tire pressures. Keep the right side pressures a few pounds higher. I don't know if you're into taking tire temps, but check them at every break in action. Three spots on the tire- inside, center, and outside of the tread. They should be consistent across the tire (a little bit higher on the outside of the righ tires and inside of the left tires). If not, adjust camber and pressure accordingly.
