well, i knew about it installing it, and afterwards it looked like it would hit the exhuast piping with a big bump in the road, but damn it.. mine seems to be hitting all the time and its really annoying, not to mention the tie bar is all mangled up now
i shiit you not i can push down on the back of my rear bumper and bounce the car and get the tie bar to smack the exhaust. it does not take much unfortunatly.
what can i do to remedy this? obviously i know that a better exhaust pipe back there with more of a bend in the area where it hits the bar would be better, but that wont come til this winter. i need a somewhat quick fix for this season. but im going to be upping the diameter to 2.5" or 3", so its just going to get worse.
the pipe back there NOW is 2.25"
i was thinking maybe some sort of a rubber stop, but then i felt the pipe back there after i got done driving it and im pretty damn sure that the stop would just burn right off after a couple times.
then i thought maybe a piece of steel with a rubber bushing or something underneath it, but then i realized it would hit more often cuz its would be so damn close to the pipe it would basically cancel itself out.
any ideas guys?

I had to take my car back to the exhaust shop to get the pipe over the axle redone and the muffler moved so that the tie bar would not hit it. I'm using 2.25 without any problems. The best thing to do would be to pull that tie bar off and install it just before you go to get your exhaust redone.
if your gonna get the exhaust done any way , just put some rubber hose over the tie bar , and put a layer or header wrap over it , so it doesnt burn the rubber , and then annoy you tell you get the exhaust redone

not a bad idea, sounds good to me. thanks man!
I think its more an issue of both the tie bar moving on the axle, and the pipes moving themselves.. (since our J's exuast system are not quite secured down as well as other cars), so maybe solving this problem by working on both ends of the problem itself is in order.
-So use the peice of rubber as said + Header wrap
-Also try and secure the piping down more, add in another bracket, so it can't move at all while in motion.

I give up...
i'm buying a VW those people love trees, so they should love eachother too... "Andy"
my thing is since he is changing exhaust to spend a minimal amount now
then when he redoes it , it can get braced better then and made sure there is alot of clearance from the tie bar
Yeah,
Mines bounces off my upper tie bar (using two).
Had a little bend in it.
Just redo the exhaust a little and you should be ok.

Putting rubber over the tie bar isn't going to change anything. The tie bar will still come up and bang the exhaust, putting stress on your exhaust mounts. I had a couple of mine break before I finally took the car in to get the exhaust redone.

uhm... pix of this setup would be appreciated
idk how tight my exhaust really is and if doesnt move, i just know that it doesnt have a flex pipe (its got the springs down by the ball joint and downpipe) right there its held up by 2 rubber bushings on both sides of the pipe. then it goes back to id say RIGHT after the axel beam and has a stock mount, rubber bushing, then the last stock mount was scrapped and a custom one welded to the muffler was added. i believe its solid with zero rubber.
all n all id say the exhaust is pretty solid, i cant really move it if i try to... so idk, what does that say???

wow, just wow...
i crawled under the car last night to put on the rubber hose and some header wrap... im saying its not gonna do a damn bit of difference...
my exhuast pipe is exactly 1/4 of an inch away from the tie-bar, no @!#$ wonder it hits on every bump.
looks like i'll be taking the bar off til i get my new exhuast
just put a couple layers of that hose on there that way the bar is actually pressed against the exhaust. dont forget the header wrap
^^ sorry I missed the rest of this post.
But I can tell you I have a least 2 inches of space back there.
Granted i"m on factory piping, and its more hitting because i have a heavier muffler back there.
But looks like you figured it out.

I never had any problems with mine hitting the exhaust. I didn't even look to see if it was close, figured it wouldn't even be an issue, you sure the install on the tie bar and exhaust is right.

cant say for the exhaust as i wasnt the person who purchased THAT section. it does look as though there's plenty of room above the pipe to have a more angled bend though, winter brings and entirely new catback section so i'll have the exhaust shop take the tie-bar into account and hopefully they can resolve the situation.
the tie bar is installed correctly though.
