replaced my rear axle today.. need to take off the drum from the new axle to clean it and adjust it...
ive beat the hell out of it with a hammer and everyother thing
ive sprayed @!#$ inside it..
ive actually cracked the drum open in one spot from hitting it so hard.. ebrake is NOT on.. and it will NOT come off any suggestions??
I saw a 2004 cavi with some retainers on the drum. Look at the lugs near the hub. Does it have star washer looking retainers screwed onto them?
has nothing i got the driver one off perfect .. still no luck on pass. beat the @!#$ out of it too
keep smackin.

ive broke the drum in several spots with a @!#$ crow bar.. bent the backing plate i dont know wut else to @!#$ do
if i could take off the hub i would switch the whole @!#$ thing ... too bad i cant with the stupid ass drum on there.. im out of ides
the hub face has rusted onto the drum. i guess its really rusted on there. if you plan on replacing the hub or want to take another whack at it off the car, take off the four nuts on the back and pull off the whole hub with it.

its off tonight, its not rusted at all.. would u like pix?
i was able to get it off by sticking a screw driver and turning the wheel backwards.. for some reason the pads were still grabbing on to it somehow..
i just did an entire axle and swapped hubs.. no rust involved
pads still grabbing onto it? thats odd, never seen that one before. so you see no surface rust between the two mating surfaces?

no im not sure wut the hell if the ebrake is adjusted wrong, i put an entire new axle and i had to pull the ebrake cable from that side pretty damn hard to catch the middle to clamp it on the axle. I could of sworn im sure i tried to get the thing off even before i put it on the car and it wouldnt.
There is a very small strip on the edge of the drum that the pad does not contact. It is bare iron and rusts very easily. It forms a lip that is taller than the surface of the drum. This catches the pads and prevents the drum from sliding right off. It is a very common thing. I have to deal with it on mine this week. Not looking forward to it.
Go Go OG Traction!!
Yea, excess brake wear causes that too. Alot of drum-brake equipped cars actually have access to the adjusters from behind the backing plate so they can be adjusted off, but the J-bodies seem to not have that, probably cuz the brakes on these cars are so microscopically tiny theres no room.
show pics, I wanna see no rust
Heh, if theres no rust, then that drum is fresh outta the box or painted. Even then, where the paint rubs off is gonna rust.
ive NEVER had a problem with drums.. i bought a new axle like i said im assuming the shoes were grabbing still.. i got a screw driver un did it and it slipped right offf..
anytime ive done my rears teh drums pop off easy as hell, almost falls off and i adjust the clicker and all is good.. if they werent on the car id show pix.. i have ZERO rust anywhere on the bottom i live in southern cali in the desert... high 120's in summer and like 80s all winter.. im not close to a beach no reason for rust at all
Its not moisture or salt that rusts brakes, its the cast iron heating and cooling in rapid succession. Its a bit more accurate to call it scale instead of rust since rust is corrosion, and scale is an effect of heating/cooling.
