Painting used Rotors, Prep work, Rust removal?
Friday, June 08, 2007 2:58 AM
I am collecting parts for the N-W-F front swap and found some grade A used rotors. The surface of the rotor looks very good and of course has some rust from sitting. I know I can clean this with steel wool or something even get them turned to make that surface nice and smooth.

I was wondering though, what about the vents and those surfaces of the rotors. Is there a good method to clean those? I want to use high temp paint on the rotors to prevent further rust. I could do my best cleaning them with brake cleaner and what not and just paint over that...but it just seems like there is a better way. With sitting in the yard there was some dirt in the vanes. I cleaned all that out. I'd hate to spend time making them nice to find that the rust or dirt left them unbalanced. Am I wasting my time here? Should I just get new rotors? I know brakes are not something to skimp on, but really these are good rotors....just not the prettiest.

The whole idea of getting used rotors in good shape was to save cash. So I don't want to spend a ton making these pretty again. It may end up being cheaper to get new ones though. Call this a learning lesson or something.

What do y'all think?

Thanks

I have seen someone soak thier rotors in acid to clean them up. It made the rotors look new.

What kind of acid? I'd be afraid it would etch too much metal away and weaken the rotors. But then I guess that all depends on the acid type and concentration.

is some stuff at home depot et all, that we us to clean the rust deposits from a machine we have. its called iron out its a powdered acid. and fairly safe to used. it will eat the rust and leave the real metal behind.rinse well and used protective gloves. and I can't recommend breathing the dust either. if you have any questions just send me a PM.

I get the same results with the Iron Out in about 2 hours, I like that idea though, with the veins in the rotors that would probably work really well.

That's when you bust out the small wire brush on the dremel.
