Brakes Grind on 1st Stop Only?!
Thursday, March 29, 2007 12:15 PM
I took my truck in to have it looked at because the brakes grind on the first stop if it has been sitting for a few hours, like when I go to or leave work. The mechanics say that they can't find anything wrong - I got new shoes, pads, and the works only about 7 months ago. The screech has gotten progressively worse, and now I can hear it really loudly in the cab with the windows up. They can't replicate the problem because they haven't been letting it sit long enough. I have a '97 F-150.

Does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone seen this problem?

Alot of brakes will make noise the after sitting awhile just from rust build up. It doesn't take lond for a little rust to start on rotors.

Yeah, this is most noticable if the car was wet when you parked it. The rust starts forming very quickly and then gets ground off when you start driving again.

Yeah, but if it does it everytime after sitting for a few hours... it's not right. You at first said grind, but then you made it sound like it was a squeal.. so which is it?

If it's a squeal, you might have glazed rotors and pads, not un-common. If it's a grind, I'm not entirely sure..

Rust forms on my brakes by the time I finish drying my car after I wash it.....you can hear it after a couple hours

If this was his case, the only thing I could think is his area must have alot of moisture in the air or something then, because it's not like it rains all the time.

I highly doubt that it's rust..

Usually if you remove the front grill and add a bowtie, it fixes the problem. Sorry I had to get that in.

We have no end of rust problems on a few of our F250/350's here at the airport if they sit for awhile. We actually ended up combining the good Wagner rotors with the stock Motorcraft organic brake pads. The good rotors don't rust up as quick and therefore don't give you that grind on the first stop.
