Road Magent Springs - my review

The Road Magnet Springs review.

Before I start let me make this clear…….

**** I have nothing to gain or lose in this situation, I'm not sponsored by them, I'm not afiliated with them, I’m not employed by them and I'm not being compensated by them. This is simply a try it before you buy it situation, which IMO is a great customer service gesture. They have to have alot of confidence in there product to risk a bad review and not even get a sale out of it.****

Road Magnet Springs made a thread talking about there company and the new lowering springs they offer for 3rd Gen J-bodies.

Road Magnet wrote:Are you looking for springs that are decently priced with excellent quality? Then check out Road Magnet Springs.

Road Magnet springs were created in 2003 to solve problems inherent in other aftermarket suspension springs. Road Magnet springs are engineered, manufactured and sold by a spring manufacturing company that has been in business since 1906. Since we have been designing and manufacturing springs for racing applications, it was an easy step to become partners with Team Lexus and help them win the 2002 Grand Am Cup. With all of the racing success stories that we had, we were asked to solve problems with typical lowering spring kits. We heard that springs were too stiff, too soft, too low, not low enough, and uneven appearance from side to side and front to rear. Every model that is offered has gone through vigorous testing to achieve the best possible ride and handling while lowering the vehicle height as much as possible without compromising safety. The vehicle will sit straight and look great since our manufacturing tolerances are very tight. Road Magnet was created as a result of conversations with car owners. We encourage you to email us or call us with your questions, comments, and suggestions so that we may continue to produce the products that are the best.

We have just redesigned our Cavalier/Sunfire springs within the past 3 months and are very happy with the result. If you have any questions or are interested in purchasing a set of our springs please check us out on our website RoadMagnet.com or e-mail us RoadMagnet@gmail.com

Well people seemed interested in them but no one stepped up. So I offered to test a set of the springs. So after a short amount of time they agreed to send me a set of springs, at no cost to me, for me to install and try out. I told them I would give them a shot. The deal was I would get the springs in the mail, try them for a while, give an unbiased review and then if I like them I buy them, if I don't I send them back. I personally have had RKSport prostreet coilovers, Tein Basics, Koni Yellows w/ Ground controls & Koni Yellow w/ sportlines, I’ve ridden in cars with stock strut for ebay coils, heated springs, Tien SS, Tein S-techs on stock struts, ect…. all on 3rd Gen jbodies, so I have plenty to compare them to. Road magnet recommends yellows with these springs (but I'm sure D-specs will work just as well.) The springs came pretty quick so I took some pics when they got here.

A couple days later I went to my shop on my day off and took the Eibach Sportlines off the Koni yellows and installed the RoadMagnet springs.

Once I got the Road Magnet springs on I make the short 3.5 mile drive home form work, I was impressed….. at first.

Well its now been about a week and I’ve driven on them for about 130 miles, all paved streets, but curbs into driveways, parking lot, train tracks, smooth streets, rough roads covered in half assed patches that should have been repaved years ago, highways, alleys, snow, ect..

At first I was impressed, at this point I’m amazed. I absolutely LOVE these springs. Of all the j-body suspensions I’ve delt with this is the best ride quality I’ve found. Now I know I’m very picky, hell there was even a company on one of my forums that told me they didn’t want to do business with me because of my overly picky. With that said maybe its just me but the suspensions that are surposed to be great that people say ride awesome, have felt to bouncy or ridiculously stiff. It seems like every other car out there had suspension setups that felt like stock ride quality put still performed, but not us. So I was happy to try something new, that is surpossed to be good. I have to admit I really didn’t have a whole lot of confidence that these would be anything special but I kept an open mind.

The ride is awesome, absolutely awesome. Road Magnet is a fitting name for the product, it feels like your stuck to the road. You feel every single little thing in the road but not in a bad way, its not rough, its not bouncy, you feel it in the feel of the car, not in your neck/back/spine. Another one of my friends (has a J-body with Gravana Tuning coilovers) said “Ok as a rider in darkstars car I can say they are nice. They are a stiff ride on the yellows. Like it rebounds fast so there is really no bounce to the car. When the car dips your dip not get thrown like most springs.” My girlfriend told me I can’t go back to the sportlines, she loves the new springs because “these ones don’t hurt when you hit a bump.” I’m very impressed you can get a decent drop and still have a close to stock ride qulity, but with a ton more road feel, it doesn’t feel at all sloppy.

These springs absolutely blow away the Sportlines, I wont go back to the Sportlines hahahaha. Now these aren’t the end all be all of j-body springs, you can get a lot lower with coilovers, you may get a slightly sportier feel with stiffer springs (at the cost of ride quality) but for a good drop, good ride quality, good road feel, and good handeling these are great. Roadmagnet with Koni Yellows is a perfect setup for a daily driver. And btw I took a look under the car, in an ideal situation you want the control arm parallel to the gorund for best handling, with these they are just a bit to low for that, the Subframe sits alittle bit lower, but not by much but then again if you want it parallel your not gonna get as low.

But yeah I’m rambeling on, basically these with Koni yellows are awesome, I would definetly recommend them, overall I couldn’t be happier.

Here is a pic of the drop on the stock 14” steelies.

Are there any noises with these springs like a clunking in the rear when you go over bumps?

I used to want a full Tein SS coilover setup, but for my DD, I think you have convinced me this might be the way to go with the Koni Yellows and Road Magnets. Hope everything keeps workin good for ya and hopefully I will get the money and make up my mind to get this combo soon. I love you gay tan cav.

I do have some clunk in the rear, it did not make the noise with the sportlines, it was just starting on the right rear, once I took it all apart and then put it back together with the road magnets it was clunking regularly from both rears, I know I need some new mounts in the rear, I went and bought them already but decieded to hold off cause hopefully it'll only be 3-4 weeks before I have a set of solid rear mounts. But knowing the mounts weren't in the greatest shape its not something I'm gonna hold against the spring manufacture. Once I get the rear solid rear mounts I'll let you knwo what hapens with it.

but to be honest, even with the clunk I still prefer them over the sportlines hahah. But I'll update this every so often and once the solid rear mounts are here I'll give a heads up

Rate is 220#/in, which is a little soft for the drop (in my opinion) but gives a softer ride. The drop is for aesthetics anyway. The marginal detriment to handling is mitigated by the fact that they aren't specifically meant to improve handling. Slightly improved handling is a side effect of the lower center of gravity.

couple other side notes....

they are a 2.2" drop, 220# spring rate, they come in the blue color shown in the pics but if you specify otherwise they will powder coat them to the color of your choice, and best of all...... MONEY BACK GUARANTEE, if your not happy send them back for a refund.

That is more of a drop than I want. I am really looking for something comparable to the Eibach Pro Kit. Would you mind speaking with them about springs like the pro kit. Or is that a waste of time? Should I just get the pro kit?

is it actually 2.2? I thought someone said it wasn't 2.2 as notes it was less of a drop than the sportlines. I want coilovers just for the fact that i can go low when i want, but having a razzi kit that's gonna be tough to go low as is, but this may be an option. Wish you'd install these on your other cavalier and get some measurements from the ground to the bumper but that won't happen. I dont blame you for not wanting to switch back then switch again. Just was wondering on the actual drop.

Maybe they can get a GP going on these things to lower the cost!!!

Well all 3rd gen cav's have the fenders (with the exeption of a bracket on the inside on certain years, but exterally they are the exact same shape and measurements) as well as the main body of the car........ which means if you want I can measure from the flat edge where the fender meets the front bumper on the side of the car to the ground, and from the same spot on the rear where the side of the bumper meets the rear 1/4 panel. I can measure the distance form there to the ground front and rear and you can compare the distance to your car to see exactly how low it will sit..... let me know if you want me to do that.

They are surpossed to be a 2.2" drop. Sportlines are 2.2" drop in the rear and 1.7" drop in the front..... which means either A- Road Magnet doesn't drop it as low as 2.2" inches all the way around, B- Sportlines drop more then advertised, or C- the springs haven't completely settled yet.

Either way I personally like the drop on these, I can go through the automatic car wash at my dealership with just very minor draging, none at all if I go as far left as possible, as opossed to horrible grinding noise with the sportlines hahaha.

^^^ thanks for that buddy. I'm gonna go measure my Goldlines on D-Specs and see what the measurements are. the body lines should be close so I can pair up the measurements.

would you mine rolling on the for a few more weeks and take measurements again? I'd really like to see if they settle anymore.

They're a bit high looking for my liking, but I'm glad you gave them a positive review, and I'm sure Road Magnet will be happy too.

Darkstar, thank you again for taking time to install our springs and make a review. We are glad you are pleased with our product and cannot wait for your input in a few more weeks.

As I have mentioned before, this is our second design on the Cavalier/Sunfire springs. We worked hard and took as much time as we could to make it perfect to our standards. We were eager for the owner of our sponsored Cavalier to try them out, and not even an hour later we got a call saying how much they enjoyed them. It's been 2 months and we still hear good things, many of their friends have said good things as well.

And yes as mentioned, we guarantee our springs or your money back.

On another note, as far as the knocking sound made from the rear of the car. We spent hours trying to perfect it, even had one of our guys in the trunk trying to figure out exactly what the sound is. I believe someone noticed on our site that we mentioned we had a resolution for this knocking sound. We have designed a product that would eliminate this sound, but as of now we do not have this available for customers. But with '07 vast approaching in just a matter of days, we should have this product out hopefully next year. Once we get a few design and redesigned products out of the way we will be able to better focus on this project. Once we start working on it I will let everyone know of the progress. I'm sure we can send a set to Darkstar for his review as well.

Also, just wanted to see if there might be any interest in these springs. I do know it is a bit early, but we might be willing to do a group purchase if we can get enough people.

Thank you.

^I would probably be interested, just dunno if I want to spend the money yet this upcoming year sometime or not. Because I plan to S/C next summer, so I gotta weigh my options.

WOW!! I took a chance and bought a brand new set on e-bay for $66. I had not read this post yet. I'm glad I didn't get a bad deal. They should arrive tomorrow. I am going to install a set of addco sway bars at the same time. I can't wait
