what are the benifits of going to an irs as opposed to twist beam?

Much better cornering and handling. Especially if you use good struts like Konis.

if i go with the irs swap out of an alero/ga will it get rid of some of my fender gap? or do i have to set my self up with some good struts/springs

I noticed it dropped my car about another inch after I went to IRS .... bear in mind though that I'm using J body springs on it and they're shorter than the alero GA ones...

Not sure if anyone has tried this swap with the factory springs (unmodified), but my initial thought is no. If you want to lower your car, you need lowering springs and good struts. A suspension swap like this will still require lowering if that's what you want.
