ok so today i get home from work and i park in the driveway. when i park i dont put the car in gear (manual) and i just use the parking brake. well i get a nock on the door and this dude kindly lets me know that my car is in the middle of the street! so i go outside and look inside my car and the e-brake is still pulled up. so i take off the ebrake and i put my car back in the driveway. then i go to put the ebrake on and i find that i can pull the ebrake lever further back than normal, with a lot less resitance-not noresistance just a lot less. so i pull the ebrake back as far as it will go and let off the brake and i start rolling backwards slowly. what could have caused this to happen and what do i do to fix it?
This is why you should always leave the car in gear.
Why don't you??
because i was always told that it puts undue stress on the transmission

same
I may run 18s, but I can do your taxes in 10 seconds flat.
I just the E brake & put into gear. Usually the e Brake cable gets worn then no longer works, Even rear brake shoes could also be out of adjustment.
being out of gear and a lack of e-brake puts could put undue stress on the rest o he car lol.
are you in the habit of turn you wheels to the curb ( is that still a recommended for parking on a hill or uneven surface ? )

Yeah, but when you use the e-brake it puts alot of stress on those shoes too. There's not much to those shoes you know, I would rather leave it in gear than pull the e-brake up with the car in neutral.
And, e-brakes don't usually work well for rolling backwards, because that is going against the direction that the car is used to braking at.
Replace your rear shoes and the drums if needed, and get your e-brake cable checked for stretching and what not, and from now on use the e-brake AND put the car in gear. Will save you alot of hassle.

Always leave the car in gear. Whoever told you it puts undue stress on the transmission doesn't know what they're talking about.
How much stress do you put on it every time you drive the car? And you think holding the car from moving is too much for it?
Your shoes need adjusting or replacement, take the drum off and find out. If you have plenty of pad there is a nut near the bottom that can be adjusted. If there isn't much pad then they need to be replaced. Also check the drum for excessive wear on the inside where the pad contacts it.
ya know, i never quite thought of it that way C.T.S. i guess i will use both like ling427ttvette said. thanx guys.
