I have a 2000 Cavalier. I'm confused some. Is it strust in the front and shocks in the rear? If so how come they had to chance the Strut mount in the rear, it was sqeaking.
I think that technically it's struts all around but people call the rear ones shocks.
Frankly, the two terms are practically interchangable these days since most people don't actually know what differentiates them.
Is this what it looks like in the rear?

That and the fact that manufacturers call them whatever they want, even if they aren't really what they're called.
typically a McPherson strut setup is whats refered to as a strut, the rears technically are struts but they are more or less just shocks with a spring perch and open threaded top for a strut mount to attach
If the spring is mounted on it then it's a strut. Anything that dampens is a shock. A strut it a type of shock. How's that for confusing.
