Grinding off little nubs on front brake calipers?
Tuesday, May 16, 2006 4:35 PM
I am rebuilding my whole suspension right now and cleaning up the calipers. Im tempted to grind off the little nubs on the outside of the front calipers as they dont look like they actually do anything, thus making the whole face of the outside piece of the caliper flat. Does anyone else know what Im talking about or done this? Im getting ancy with the grinder so I guess Ill find out.

The iron caliper bracket? Thos "nubs" guide the brake pads.

Brake pads dont go anywhere near them. There is a spring which applies pressure which goes in the middle of the caliper then there are notches cut in the caliper which the nubs on the break pad fit into on the inside to hold it into position. These nubs stick out on the outside of the caliper on the ends.

Definately looks awsome. I'd be careful about how much material you're taking off. But looks like you did a good job. Completely awsome looking compared to stock.

I just took off enough material to make them smooth, very little in most areas, theres a lot of meat on those suckers.

For anyone else considering this... note that one of the biggest engineering issues with disc brake calipers is the flex inherent in the design. Because you have to wrap around the rotor, you need the ensure that the part holding the two pads flexes as little as possible. Bigger calipers cover more of the rotor and have less flex. Smaller ones have to wrap right around the edge and have more flex.

If you weaken the body of the caliper and cause more flex you can run into issues.

Looking at the pics of what BlackEco has done, I don't imagine he'll have any issues at all. I just wanted this potential for issues to be pointed out before anyone goes and just starts grinding away at their calipers.

I've got a pair of J-body calipers that I'd be willing to put up for sale if anyone wants a pair to try this on. pm me for details.

Looks very cool. I hope you put more paint on than that pic, though. Looks pretty thin, especially near the bottom right hole in the last pic.

What kind of paint did you use to do this? Was it like spray paint or canned paint that you use a brush with?

How come the last painted picture shows that it's completely smooth but the picture of the one installed on your car has lettering/numbers on it?

Did you use an angle grinder or a bench grinder? They look great. How have they held up to regular use? With such a smooth look you could even add a graphic or lettering to them!
