obnoxious noise
Thursday, March 23, 2006 9:45 PM
I was being driven in my car today when my Dad decided to do a real tight left turn (in a neighborhood, so no stupid driving there). Back to the problem, the front end made a loud/nasty/obnoxious noise. Enough to make both of . I've never done anything suspension before so I have no idea. Drivability is fine, pulls to the left a tad, but I think that's alighment. Any ideas on what it could be? I know it's a broad category, but I have no idea.

Mine does the same thing, Is it kind of a rubbing growling noise?

posibly tie rod ends or ball joints.

you can check them yourself by jacking the car up and garbbing hold of the tire. try wiggling the tire from left to right. next, grab hold of the tie rod end and wiggle it left and right as well. by having one hand over the tie rod end, you should be able to feel if there is play at all. i cant remember how to check for ball joints. while you are there, check and make sure your CV boot isnt split open either.

if there is play, get it looked at. if you dont even know what a tie rod end looks like, get some one else to look at it tie rod ends are what help keep both wheels pointed in the same direction.

as for the rubbing grownling noise, more than like it would be a wheel barring. i cant say for sure as i havent heard yours, but the way your are describing it is the way a shot wheel barring/hub sounds like. get it replaced because it will just get worse.

Injection is nice but id rather be BLOWN!

Maybe its the power steering. If it is a loud moan type sound you probably need more fluid.

I'll check that out. I don't think it's the power steering because it only makes the noise when the wheels are all the way turned.

The PS always makes noise when you have it turned hard over (all the way). That's not what your talking about right?

Easy way:

Car on ground, grab the top of the tire and try to shake it left/right. If the ball joints are really bad you can hear them popping when the whole car starts moving.

Harder and more sure way:

Pull the cotter pin out of the castle nut, back the nut off. Take a BFH and whack the cast iron part of your spindle until it disloges a bit. Get a large prybar and pry your lower control arm down while trying to pull your spindle off the ball joint. Once off you should have to apply a bit of force to the ball joint to make it move. If it flops around, or you could move it easily with your pinky, it's bad.
