I was just wondering how some would compare Sprint 1.8" springs to Eibach or other well known brands. I read the FAQ and did a search, didn't find anything useful other than the typical bs. I was looking for some real feedback.
Sprint are rather stiff (relatively high spring rate). You need Koni's or D-Specs, turned up fairly high, to control them. It's going to be a very stiff ride, too harsh for most daily drivers. Otherwise they're fairly good springs, don't sag too much.
They probably were not originally designed for our cars, but rather a Grand Am or something that weighs slightly more (guessing!). Since GM re-uses dimentions on many cars, different springs will fit in many cases.
Yeah, I am putting them on my daily driver. They just came in this morning and they looked really decent for what I paid for them. I got them for $100.00 from a guy that bought them and then never installed them. Still sealed in the box with the original receipts. I wanted Eibachs but compared to the $250 price tag for them and not half that for these I figured this was a deal I couldn't pass up. I'm gonna try them and if I hate them I'll switch to Eibachs instead.
By the way, where's the best place to get the Tokiko D-Specs? Or maybe Koni Reds? I heard they will work too. I don't want to mess with the cartridges for the front. I'm not that mechanicaly inclined to try and replace the internals.
Reds are cartridge inserts too. Most Koni's are. It's really not that bad to install. Basic tools and a can-do attitude goes a long way.
eBay is usually the cheapest... Although you can get them from many places (Gravana and APlusPerformance come to mind first.)
Cool. I take it you've done them before. I've been searching eBay for them and I did find the D-Specs but oddly enought they were more there than they are at Gravana. I put a post on jboi.org to see if someone in my area knows of any local places to get them too.
you could try
jbodysource.com
this place has the koni reds, yellows,
.
koni reds and yellows
and if im not mistaken i believe there are people selling some in the classifieds but im not completely sure.
i hope that helps you out some
There were some a week ago in the classifieds, but I think they're gone now.
I've done yellows before. I used a hacksaw, vice (just to hold it still), sharpie marker, drill with small-ish bit, torque wrench and torques socket. Took me about an hour cause I was dinking around and taking my time.
No welding? I can do just about anything if I have a shop manual, rebuild a motor, assemble a carb if I have to, but I can't weld worth a sh*t. And that's the biggest thing. I had read somewhere that you have to weld the casing back together with the new insert.
then you best bet would be the d-specs.

I thought so myself. No mess, just remove and replace. But I wish they didn't cost so much. I know they''re good quality but there's no real alternative that doesn't cost as much or more.
No there's no welding. Where did that come from?
I listed all the tools needed. Having others may make it easier, but those are the necessary ones.
Instructions:
Take old strut off car.
Cut in half about 1" down from top, Koni directions give you the correct dimention.
Rip innards out, nothing too hard here.
Drill hole in bottom, drill out filler rivit.
Put new insert in bottom part. Botl in place, torque to spec.
Put protective boot on assembly.
Put back on car.
Tada!

Cut me some slack, dude. If I already had all the answers I wouldn't have asked. I don't try to pretend I know everything.
CTS, thanks. I honestly had no idea how the cartridges weould be installed. Some guy I was talking to on another site tried telling me you had to weld the casing back shut but I dind't think that was the case. But since I didn't know for sure I asked. It sounds pretty simple so that leaves one more option. I think there's a shop here in Des Moines that actually sells the Koni stuff. I saw a few of their cars with the Koni suspension a while back so i'm guessing they're a dealer.
koni are only inserts and are simple to put in. put it this way, if you can take a strut out of a car you can install the koni fronts. you drill a hole in the bottom of the knuckle to release the pressure than just use a dremel and cut at the top of the knuckle. then slide in the insert.
if your looking for where to buy this stuff then you didnt read the faqs enough cuz theres a list of about 15 sites that sell all the suspension parts listed in the faqs
Like I had said before, I was looking through the FAQs and the search for what people thought about the Sprint springs. CTS gave me an answer, one which I trust because I trust his judgement. Then it turned into talking about Konis and Tokiko. Look, it's not a matter of where I can find them. I know how to use Google and Ask Jeeves. That's not the case so stop bustin' my balls. It's done. I know what's involved now, I asked my questions and got my answers.
Jonny, BaggedCav isn't trying to bust you're balls. He just comes across that way sometimes. He knows what he's talking about, just not how to say it gently.

sorry but that post lead me to think differently
yeah like cts said baggedcav knows what he is talking about. even though he comes across the wrong way sometimes. he jus hates it when people try to cheap out on this stuff. im sure if you looked around on the org someone has a set for sell. put up an ad in the classifieds. that would be your best bet if you dont want to pay that much. but if you want a good ride your going to pay around 700-800 dollars.
It's not that I'm trying to cheap out. But I don't have a money tree and it took me over a year just to be able to save up enough money to get the springs and struts as it is. And about the asking the best place, I'm not blind. I've found a ton of places. I know there's places like Gravana or eBay or Mantapart or RSM or Cavalier Connection or JTuners or whatever they call themselves now, but I also hear about their crappy service and horrible shipping issues. Hence I was asking the BEST place to go. I always hear how Gravana is a good company with good products but I haven't been too impressed with them so far since it took them an entire month to get back to me when I called them with some questions about a few of their parts. And when I finally ordered them they sent me the wrong parts. Granted they fixed the problem but not a good way to start.
gravana is a great company. they've been going through server problems lately with them moving and it takes them awhile to get back to people but they are one of the best out there along w/ jason at a+. If you have any question about gravana, you can contact teske since he works there or you can go through jim. both are great people to deal w/
i havent had any problems with gravana or a+. they both have awesome customer service. they have helped me out alot and worked with me on payment methods while i am overseas. i know what you mean about the money thing. if it wasnt for this deployment i wouldnt have the money either to put into my car. hope everything works out for you.
I'm probably coming off like an ass myself, so if that's the case I apologize. But like was said, Gravana had been dealing with some issues with the server and their move, so I probably caught them in the middle of all of that and I shouldn't hold that against them.
There's only a few companies I don't have some gripe about, but in general the ones in the faq are good to deal with. I think that applies to just about any company over the internet.
So I went to the member registry and I was looking for people using the Sprint springs and I noticed that several don't list their shocks and the ones that do many list GR2s or Tokiko HP or some other stock replacement. All I ever read and all I've ever been taught is this is generally a bad idea, so WTF??!!
