Air ride / bottoming out
Thursday, December 15, 2005 8:50 AM
I just got a new air ride setup on my Sunfire. Was wondering if there were anything out there to prevent from bottoming out like bump stops. So that the bump stop or what ever it is hitting the ground instead of my exhaust system

bump stops are put are the suspenion near the mount. its impossible to have them hitting the ground. what kit do you have? try adjusting the damping on the struts or stiffenin' up each bag so you dont bounce all around

I have the complete kit from easystreet They have the dampening on each strut. from 0 to 9. 9 being the stiffest. I've set it to 0 n it still bounces like an SOB. I fond that lowering the car a bit reduces the bounce nut it's still bad.

thats because you have it set too soft. i have my rears at 4 clicks from the right and my fronts and 5 clicks from the right. i ride at 40-45pis in the front and 55psi in the rear and i dont have a problem. you just need to adjust your stiffening on the struts thats all

well, i was just gonna make a new post about something similar, but i guess ill add it here.

i wanna make a frame of sorts to either weld or bolt to the bottom of the car, so when i lay it out, it will kinda rest on the frame part i built, instead of the actual car frame/body.
similar to what SpyderWizard did, but not so much for the purpose of dragging it. just to have a balanced lay-out and not damage kits/exhaust

hope that made sense

easystreet kits do not lay anything on the ground

maybe not the actual frame, but im not worried about that. i dont plan on trying to do that,. im more worried about the kit and exhaust.

yes let me waste my time and drive all the way to your house to look under your car. the only reason you posted in here was to start @!#$. if you can you can, good for you but provide a pic or else im not believing it

Cool, I'll try the frame thing under the car. I'll try to play with the psi but can't go that low until i get new tires. 50 psi, and if my car bounces, it'll hit the quarter panel. What's your wheel size/offset with 40-45pis

if your tires hit, just roll your fenders. i rolled all of mine to be able to tuck nicely. im running 225/40/18 on 18x7.5 rims w/ a 48mm offset.

Ok theres a reason why some people on air have problems with their mufflers being damaged. its because they arent tucked up under the bumper properly, I have the easystreet kit and on stockies i can get it close to laying the motor on the ground but its NOT on the ground
its impossible to do unless u have super small tire on the stock rims.
so i'll support baggedcav98 on his statements

maybe he can, maybe he cant, i dont know. like i said until i see pics im saying he cant. i seen esb hack up the front of his car to try and get it lower and after cutting and removing things, he still couldnt lay anything

On level ground with stock (or same size) tire, with easystreet, you can not lay anything on the ground. Some kits get low enough that they will hit the ground, but not the stock body or engine.

Notice I said: On level ground.
If you high center the car of course you can lay it out. Many roads are this way from normal driving wear and tear, so you can't drive around laid out.

As for stiffness of the dampers, at 0 your car will bounce all over. You need at least 3, I would recommend 5ish (basically what BaggedCav already said).

If you have a kit and it hits, you may need to build a frame. Be very careful doing anything like this. You don't want to end up bending the unibody somewhere.

^^^thats a very good point...i never thought about damaging the uni-body.

hmmm, this could be a tricky one

ok ill throw my advice in on this 40- 45 psi is where i drive at.. thats ride hitch for me, and im on 18 with a 30 series tires, and yes i drag all kinds of stuff, body kit, , uhhmm body kit, hmmm neons, ....uhmmm ya anything i can, but my ride is pretty decent, and if it gets ruff, i raise it up a lil, or stay off the road... i can lay mine right on the exuast, but not tear it up, although raise front drop back, wow i can throw some sparks, but eh, you pay to play, lol, anyways my 2 cents... peace, im putten stoppers on my frame too so i dont tear up my new body kit..

Some of yall must have some low ass hanging pipes. Mine was never a problem.
Of course I do have a real good muffler shop I use and he made three cat backs for my car before we were happy. It tucks up real nice.

You can lay out on 17s with like 205/40-17 tires. But I hate that size tire. And it throws your speedo off.

I am all that is man
