Springs gone uneven?..
Sunday, December 04, 2005 1:40 PM
I've lowered my '03 Sunfire with Vogtland springs (1.2 front, 1.4 rear) 5 months ago, using stock struts/shocks. About a month ago my car started bouncing a little bit, I checked tiregaps and was surprised: front left tiregap is 1/2 smaller then the front right one, and rear left is 1/2 bigger then rear right one. I went to local Les Schwab to check my struts and they said those are fine.
I don't think that the springs could be bent.

Any suggestions?

oh, I was doing donuts a lot, maybe that could F*up my springs?..

Any of you used Skunk 2 springs (2 inch drop)? I was gonna buy those if my springs are bad. Also, I was looking at Progress spirngs(1.7 drop I think, I'm not sure though)
Anybody used those?

ThnX in advace!
P.S. What's the difference between shocks and struts? Shocks go in the front, struts in the rear?

3rd gens have struts all the way around. The only real different between a shock and a strut is that a strut can be used to locate another suspension component (control arm, etc), while a shock is only used for damping.

J's aren't 100% even weight distribution. I know my front left can't fit two fingers, whereas front right can fit inbetween 2-3

That would be the answer to any problems you are having. Vogtlands are also rated at a 1.7" drop, not 1.2/1.4. The increased bounciness is probably from blown struts (despite what Les Schwab tells you). Upgrade your shocks to Koni's or D-Specs (I do know someone with those springs on AGX's, but they void the warranty on them).

You're on uneven ground. 1/2" over 6' is acceptable to almost any cement company as even, untill you start measuring your car.

Your struts are blown. As said above, struts bear weight and/or hold another part in place. Shocks only provide dampening force.

Skunk2 are very stiff, too stiff for most people.

Read the FAQ before you do anything.

I noticed that my 2001 was lower on the drivers side. I measured it to be .5 inches. At first ii thought it was my springs. Then I pondered that I needed to go on a diet...big time! I could use a little exercise.

I used to sell Chevy's. So when new Cavaliers came in, I took the time to measure many cars.

Tons of J's are out that much. At least one's from 2000-2003 that I saw myself. .5 was the largest difference I saw. It was a frequent measure on enough cars to call it the norm. Always being lower on the drivers side.

Thnx to all you guys, I appreciate your help.
Is there a way to check struts though?..

you sit on the front left side correct? where do you think the weight is dispaced to?

ever sit on a couch cushion for over an hour and notice when you get up, the one cushion is more compressed than the rest?

its no different with any other materials really.

that and the fact that chevy economy cars arent exactly quality made.

thing is, lowering springs are there for performance mainly. not to make everything perfectly even. function over form. coilovers are for corner weighing a car (if you dont know about corner weighing, use google and type it in.) and making it AS CLOSE TO even weight distribution as possible.

but these cars are not symetrical in weight in the least bit...

dont expect perfection out of an economy car.... never.

and if you are asking about shocks and struts, might wanna take a gander of that post at the top called the FAQ, it answers pretty much all the frequently asked and debated stuff on here.

this website says that the drop is 1.8" 1 inch and 1/8, right? so, AGX's should be fine?
Is 1.7 supposed to be 1 inch and 7/16? I got confused there...

1/8" = .125"
1.8" is just over 1 3/4" drop
