91 2.2 no start Please help!
Friday, April 04, 2008 8:09 AM
Have a 91 cav 2.2 stock rusty but usually trusty Drove into driveway last nite and went to go out today and NO START! Batt good, cranks OK, sounds like fuel pump" whining" OK, next thing is to check for spark, Question is, if no spark where do I go from there? I dont have any special meters and it looks like everything I
need to check is buried down between the engine and the firewall Is there a common problem that usually happens that I can throw a part at or am I doomed to go to the "pros" at the repair shop?

My experience with that problem its that the ICM failed. Its the little module under the coil packs.

I have had this happen to my old Grand Prix and my buddy's 91' cavy.

Maybe try new spark plugs if you say/think youre not getting spark. are they the original plugs that you had in there when you got the car?

Sam, I changed the plugs & wires last fall.
Tinkles, its cold here in Michigan still, but might try a "junk yard ICM swap and see if it solves the problem...I dont know much about the newer cars(I am a points-distrubutor, 1 coil type of guy) I have built some streetrods, but am lost on this electronics stuff
Thanks all

I would lean towards the crank position sensor! This will cause the car to turn over all day and not start.I want swear to this but,it should be mounted on the back of the block on the passenger side.U could go to autozone or advances website enter ur cars info and do a search for the part so u know what ur looking for. That is my recom b4 spending stupid on something that may be a simple fix,Those sensors go like no tommrrw, espec with the age factor of the car.

follow up on no start.....changed the crank sensor, still no start. Took out coil pack and had it tested at Autozone and found ICM was bad.
Replaced ICM and problem solved! I must say though, its better to punch yourself in the face than do this job! There is almost no access to these parts, its the hardest repair I have ever done. The engineer that designed this ignition set up should be shot!

no spark is almost always coil pack(s) or control module

crank sensor failure on these 2.2L is not a common issue at all

unlike on some of the 3100 3300 3400 3800 engines and such

good luck
