can anybdy suggest a decent (meaning easiest install
turbo unit to put on a currently N.A. 3.1----and what other mods are required (computer, ECM ect ect ect).
I'd prefer to keep it strictly OEM parts since I have a contact at the wreckers so get a deep discount (a good drivers door complete cost me 10 bucks last week)

I want ot turbo my car but it seems like you can't turbo a 3.1
but apparently you can swap parts from the Rare Poniac Grand am that had a turbo not the super charger, or the Poniac Firebird.
I have a buddy he recently bought a 3.1 parts car, and the guy he bought it from said he had a turbo from a firebird on it, So I guess they will fit too.
there is a a number of 3.1 turbo's there is a guy not sure if he is registered on here that has a bad turbo 3100.

you can turbo a 3.1 if you have the $$.. I know its rare but they make the turbo's for those 3.1s from the factory. if you can snag one out of a junk yard thats the way to go.. Now I don't know if its compatible or not but rsmracing.com has a turbo they make for the 2.8 feiro's but that could be an option.

Lee Lemoine has turbocharged a '93 using MOSTLY oem TGP parts, but it is still more or less a custom build, as either the Cavalier's engine mounts have to be re-engineered to work with the stock crossover pipe (and, if this is an ABS car, the ABS must be removed to make room in the engine bay), or a custom crossover pipe has to be built for the Cavalier's body. It's far, far from a simple bolt-on process, even though both engines are 3.1L GM builds.
This isn't even getting into the internal differences of the two engines or the accessories needed to power the boosted application.
i was in the middle of having a custom header made so that i could turbo the 3.1L...you can buy a stage 1 kit custom made for around 1500 bucks...ish. stage 3's are running me about 2300.
A 3.1 can definitely be boosted, whether or not you choose to use stock TGP parts...
For example:
It's cluttered, but it sure goes! A remote mount setup would clean up the engine bay pretty well, I'd imagine.
As for internal differences of the 3.1 engines found in cavs vs. TGPs, you might be surprised just how few there really are.

91 SSE - if you want to use mostly or all OE parts, see if you can dig up a turbo grand prix...the whole car. they aren't real easy to come by for the most part, as production was quite limited. but that's definitely the easiest route for sourcing everything you'd need.
mounts will need to change, turbo would likely need a rebuild (or replacement...they're TINY!!), but at least you'd already have the computer a engine harness ready to go. big plusses, both.
cost? that all depends on your sources for bits & pieces. it can run anywhere from dirt cheap if you know the right people to way too much if everything needs rebuilding or replacing.
vague, i know, but that's just how it goes sometimes.

What if one was willing to build a custom setup to come on a stock 3.1..... anyone done that? I already have a brand new 3.1 waiting in my garauge to be pluged with a turbo....
go for it...anything can be done with the right amount of effort and finances. its all about what you wanna/are willing to do.
