Need to replace the Rt CV joint after hitting a rock on a canyon road. When I checked her out, I also discovered that the intermediate shaft travels about a 1/2" in and out of the transaxle. So I've got two questions:
1. Any advice on replacing the half shaft?
2. Is the intermediate shaft supposed to do that?
Decided to go with a rebuilt half shaft from Cardone. I truly hope they use the larger, more appropriate diameter for manual trannies. Will also replace the drive shaft seal on the tranny, the axle nut and control arm bushings.
Am I forgetting anything?
I hope you plan on replacing both sides control arms bushings. Its going to handle pretty weird if you don't.
AFAIK, all the aftermarket axles are the same diameter, which is somewhere between the 4 cyl and 6 cyl size.

No. I only ordered one set for the side I'm tearing apart. I want to go with poly all around, but can't afford to wait for them.
Thanks for the tip though, maybe I can pick-up some for the other side locally.
P.S. Thanks for all the detailed info you post on here Cahill! Your posts have been a big help to me on dozens of projects. (Now if I could only get my car looking as good as yours.)
You should be able to get poly ones next day at Advance, and maybe even AutoZone. I think I got mine 2 days later or something. But, as long as you're using the rubber ones, it shouldn't be too big of a problem. I just figured you were using poly.
I try to lay it all out on the table for everyone to see, and I'll be the first to admit, there are others out there that are far more knowledgeable than me
I've had trouble getting poly here in CA. Two week wait minimum for everything but sway bar end links. (Unless, of course, you're driving a Honda.) Which is especially annoying since the ones I want are made right here in LA.
My front wheel bearing was toasted. Came apart in my hands when I went to pull it off! (I didn't realize it had taken that bad of a hit.)
What do you use to pull the half shaft out of the transaxle? Can't get it loose.
Also wondering how you lock the new one in place without damaging the joints?
I typically use a pry bar. It needs to come out fairly straight to make it easy. To put it in, just push it in until it seats. You're going to have to drain the trans first, unless you want the fluid to pour out the axle hole.
