Engine block codes?

Okay so I was at the parts store trying to get ready for a tune up on the RS. The computer give me the wrong part number, here's where I remember the guy saying the engine had been changed. This could be good it the numbers match the air filter year it would be a 2.2 not a 2.0.

Before I go and start swapping parts from my 2.2 I think I should be sure what I have to work with because frankly anyone could have put a newer air cleaner on it. I figure I can find the numbers all I need to know is where and how to de-code them.

Not really sure what you're asking here.....

Do you want to find out if you have a 2.2 instead of a 2.0?

an 89 RS will have a 2.0 in it.

Okay yes to the first guy I want to know if it's a 2.2 or 2.0. as far as I could find with my last two the engines are exactly the same on the outside. At least between '89 And '90.

And "Pezed" I know a stock four cylinder for Cavis was 2.0 in 89. My last two Cavaliers were a '90 VL and then an '89 VL and now I got an '89 RS. But, I was told that the engine had been changed at some point before the last owner got the car.

So if there is a site or something I could look at to "decode" the block numbers or casing numbers, that is what I'm asking about.

A 2.0 OHV is P to 87 and 1 from 87-89 from the info I have

2.2 is G from 1990 thru 91 then 4

This is the eight digit in the vin.

The engine number is on the front of the block or at the rear near the transaxle

Well, it's a start

Here is a link with all the 2.2 casting numbers

The 2.0 casting number is 10045086 from 87-89. If you can throw up a pic, it would be alot easier, unless you enjoy doing the reasearch on your own .

I haven't broke out the camera yet seems how we still have a ton of snow the pictures would be worthless. I'm not working Friday so I'll put it back in the garage and take some pictures after the snow melts off.

I drove it a round today and the stupid Service engine soon light keeps coming on. It sounds like it's "Missing" when the light is on, so, I'll have to fix that good enough reason to get it inside. Other then the "normal wear in tear" crap the car is great, it handles great, and doesn't do anything else that would worry me.

I was just thinking that maybe it might be worth it to do the five speed swap if it already has the 2.2 in it. Because honestly the automatic sucks, no "go" and I miss that in control feeling of a stick, well that and overdrive (is 3500 RPMs normal for 60mph??)

Got it the garage just didn't get anywhere near it after that, too much to do with the big X-mas being just two days away to much going on. Later
