piston and rod questions...
Sunday, September 11, 2005 11:52 AM
1st where the hell can i find 3100 high compression forged pistons, 11:1 at the minimum 13:1 ideal, i spent a few hours trying to track some down online and all i could come up with is pos cas oe replacements..

2nd after looking trough j body performance i noticed that 327 small block rods work in the 3.1/3100 rotating assembly. from what i understand they have to be 5.7" small journal rods. my question is if anyone has tried to use small block forged h beam rods in a 3100? willl they clear the cylinder walls, piston skirts?

#1: http://www.wiseco.com/ They can make any piston you desire.

#2: yes SBC rods can be used. the crank end of the rod has to be machined down .200" and you'll need some custom pistons because of the larger wrist pin. Of course you already took care of that with #1

Also forgot to mention: Stock rods are forged and rated at 7000rpm. Most people say they are good for 400horsepower. Unless you are going to be building a monster motor (and 20+ psi of boost) I wouldn't be too concerned about the rods.

im planning to build a very high compression motor and spray alot of nitrous, im going 60 over and i just want to make sure everything holds up at the track.
do you know what the crank is rated to, and if i can find copper head gaskets anywhere?

I've personally never heard of a crank failing. The bearings are the weak point in a high rpm/torque motor they eat up bearings like candy , need replaced every 4-5 years or so. There are people running in the low 12s on completly stock motors (89jyturbo) so i wouldn't worry about it personally.

60 over is to far, max i would safly do is 40 over. never heard of a crank failing.

the oiling system is the weak part of theese motors. im not exactly sure what you are using, but use a 3x00 block, the oiling is way better in them. they are priority main oil feed and the oil passeges are a lot bigger.

jbp sells .060 over pistons for the 3.1.. so i assume the block can be bored to that 0.o..its the largest they have available..

im using the whole 3100 motor, as a matter of fact i just picked it up today 85,000 miles runs awsome, kinda a shame im tearing it all down, i could drop it right in and be done with it =P
