Lighting issue
Saturday, August 13, 2005 11:43 PM
Okay, I put PH2 Cavy tails on my Ph1 bird, and someone said to put in a Cavalier flasher unit.

Well, today I went and bought one, and put it in...well, its the same part number, so it had no effect

So I have no idea what to do now!

did you change the bulb socket and rewire for the cavie tail lights or is the same socket.

Are your 'bird lights like my 89? the turn signal and brake bulbs are separate on my car. If so, then you either need to rewire things (yech!) or get a converter used for trailers to convert a "3 wire system" to a "2 wire system." These converters are common since many Toyota and other Asian vehicles use the 3 wire setup like the 'bird, and most boat and utility trailers are only 2 wire systems. Just consider the Cavvy tails to be "trailer lights" and you'll be all set.

If you're interested in rewiring instead of installing the adapter, lmk and I'll get some schematics

Ok, I just spent some time looking through the wiring diagrams. This actually looks fairly simple.

There's a white wire at the stop light switch in the Sunbird. If you run a wire from that white wire to the position "J" on the turn signal switch, the turn signals and brake lights in the Cav tails should work correctly. Look for a white wire in the turn signal switch and an empty location on the other half.

Schematics can be sent via email if still needed.

So I have to pop the cover off the colum to do this, or can I find it when I pop the plastic case off the dash under the column?

You need to remove the cover under the dash so you can see the brake switch and the bottom of the steering column.

My repair manual doesnt get that in depth. Would you be willing to take a photo of the unit for me?

I'm glad I saw this post when I did, I'm having the same problems as 89Sunbird and yesterday I got the turning switch assembly and I was just abouit to put it in my car today, lol Now I'm glad I know there diffrent cause you have to pull the steering wheel to get them out.
slowolej, are you talking about rewiring the brake light switch instead of the stalk/control thing in the steering colum? Could you e mail me diagrams also please
I've been trying to figure this out forever and I can only find the wiring diagram for one type of tail lights and it dosent say which type they are.

Hey...

I work on cars for a living, so don't be too upset if I don't want to pull mine apart on my time off to take some pictures.

I'm not talking about rewiring the brake light switch. I'm talking about adding a wire to the turn signal switch connector at the bottom of the steering column. The Cavalier wiring harness will have this white wire already installed. The Pontiac wiring appears to have an open wire.

I'll try to print schematics for sending.
